Krakow, an oasis after a mad day of travel

Picture this: It's 4.20am and you are arriving at a big empty station to get a 6 hour train to Warsaw from Berlin only to find out it is 2 hours late. Your breakfast consists of a strange thing only found outside Scotland called a McCroissant and a tea. You have been up since 3 am in order to get a connecting local train to the main station having had about 1 hours sleep (see updated berlin entry for details!) You need to get your reserved seat on the Warsaw to Krakow train but that's not goi...

Growing Pains + Gains

Since arriving to Europe around a month ago, Michael has continuously tried to coerce me into writing more entries in my blog. I never did throughout our travels to London, Prague, the Czech and Polish countryside, Wroclaw, Warsaw, Bialystok, areas around Bialystok, back to Warsaw again, and then to Krakow (with a side trip to Auschwitz, my second trip in a year and a half). I never wrote separate entries describing my stays in these places due to a number of reasons - for one, I felt like it...

A Wawel of a time.....(yeah, sorry)

... foreign currency before returning home - drinking and eating. That pretty much ends the story. The next day we jumped on the train to the Airport, then jumped on the Plane that took us back to London.

.......

Sorry for the quality of the blog - it's rushed and written a week later. Go read the 20,000km across Australia one instead, I'm proud of that one.

Krakow and Auschwitz

... along the train tracks. I like guided tours because of the information they give you, but I wish I had more time to wander in the camps. Wandering allows me to gain a greater appreciation of where I was, and I wasn't able to do that, so I feel like I didn't get a complete understanding of the camps. Back to Auschwitz, we passed through the 'Arbeit Macht Frei' gate at the beginning of the tour, before we went to the few buildings that housed some kind of museum. We saw selections ...

... t appreciate it. Now I cant blame them for that, I would be ****** off too but with the drink and the pent up aggression they were carrying around from their experiences they dealt with the situation with a great deal of force rather than any kind of diplomacy the result of which was me getting dragged from the bed and slapped across the floor to land in a heap in the hallway. Guy's, to this day I still have no memory of events but when I think about them I'm not only embarrassed and still ...

... into a bare room. Your call, but be forewarned. 2) If you´re interested in the salt mine, would definitely recommend going it on your own to save money, but once you board the minibus, make sure you ask for the full name of the salt mine rather than just "Wieliczka" - there are lots of stops that fit that bill. 3) Trecius guesthouse is a great value for the money - especially if you get the room with the bathroom down the hallway. It's right off ...

... names on their luggage, that would make it easier to find when they finished their shower. Then they led then to the "showers" where the people were told to strip naked. The Nazis told all tier unwitting victims to memorize the number of the hanger their things were on and to neatly bundle their things so that the scramble after the shower was more organized. Really, this was just to make it easier for the clean-up crew in about 10 minutes. Also, this ensured that German ...

... the burned all the bodies... It was one of the most traumatic visits of my life. Mind boggling evil that reveals what the human heart is capapble of. For the next couple of days I rested. The weather was **** so it did not bother me too much to rest, and , after throwing around a few options I decided to head south to the Tantra mountains. It is a couple of hours away very close to the border of Slovakia and was supposed to be very beeutiful.

... undeniable and daunting truth. My mind turned to grand thoughts and sweeping historical conclusions. I thought that the Holocaust was unfortunate. I remembered why I stopped reading about the Holocaust three years ago. My mind turned to other sad genocides through History and I deemed History unfortunate and I wondered why I still read so much history. I thought, nobly, that I must be a stoic type to face this sort of thing. I walked further around the site and at the second gas ...

Midnight train to Krakow

... were able to secure two rooms with 4 beds each, each room has locks, but there was only one shower for the 6 of us plus the additional room that they have which could accommodate an additional 4 people. In addition there was free internet access and satellite t.v. Instead of showering which would have been the logical thing to de, we just dropped off our stuff and set out to explore the city. The city is compromised of the old city center which is surrounding by a ...
