If heaven's not what it's cracked up to be...

...send me back to Gimmelwald. The above quote was written in our hostel by an anonymous backpacker years ago, and it is undeniably true. We had read and heard wonderful things about Gimmelwald and our lodging, the Mountain Hostel. I was getting a little nervous that they wouldn't live up to the hype. Happily, everything is true and even better. The hostel is a fantastic collection of travellers. Gimmelwald is a little difficult to reach, so those who make it here tend to be laid back, outdoo...

Snow, seclusion, views, Gimmelwald

Every once and a while you find a place that is off the beaten path and turns out to be just a great place to hang out and appreciate moments. I found it in Gimmelwald. I was told about this place about 3 months ago when I was in The Netherlands and now that I was continuing my tour through Switzerland I had a chance to check it out. Manny was still hanging around. For a guy that wasn't going to even go to Switz I was surprised that he was taggin along with me. The two Americans that we met i...

An amazing hiking weekend!

INTERLARKEN: I spent the Friday night at Cats 'stable' room just outside of Geneva. It was wonderful as l had major chocolate cravings and Cat got to work and made me a hot chocolate, gave me M&Ms , cookies and all sorts of other chocolate goodies and l settled down and watched some good old Aussie comedy for the first time in 8 months- Cath and Kim! Felt a bit bad as Cat wanted to get an early night and l was keeping her up with Caths annoying voice and "Look at me" but it was bliss to h...

The Vertical Mile

Sorry I haven't made a post for a while. I have been away from a free internet connection and just generally really busy trying to cram everything in. But here's what I've been up to.

Interlaken was a bit boring with the exception of the adventure sports, so I left early in the morning for Gimmelwald. After a train, a bus, and a cable car, I arrived in paradise!!

Gimmelwald is a town of 140 people overlooking a beautiful valley with a spectacular view of the mountains.

Gimmelwald: For the Swiss Alps in Your Lap

Cant beat 40 euros for a flight from Istanbul to Bazel, Switzerland.  By far the best country in all of Europe.  I make Gimmelwald my home base (sort of) which is right on the cliffs of the Alps, and from there I make a side trip to Laussane for some fondue (sort of).  I will let the pics speak for themselves here, but if you decide to visit Switzerland and dont go to the Jungfrau Region, then your trip is a FAILURE!  This is why people vacation in Switzerland.  The fondue was cool, but it ne...

it was really nice there with some shops and restaurants. So we hop on the train and little do we know once we arrive...the town is pretty much closed! I think there was maybe 3 shops open and no restaurants what so ever!! Apparently November is a bad month to go anywhere in Switzerland, its the time ...

... any time). Needless to say I wish I could bottle up that feelin of peace and keep it with me... I hope to come back to the Alps for Christmas, we'll see. however bein that Interlaken is kinda like Banff, it will probably be very busy and such during that time so, I just have to enjoy my short time now... The bus's in Interlaken stop runnin in between noon and 1pm, I guess its their lunch break! so we had to wait for the bus for about 45 ...

We made a couple/few revolutions, took a few dozen pictures, and started our descent. We decided, at the encouraging of Rick Steves, to stop off at the tiny, and I mean TINY ...

Extreme Sports Capital

... and another day of biking around the entire city, we set off at midnight to drive on the Autobahn to Bern. So instead of spending the night on a sleeping train, we took turns driving and sleeping (thank you Alex for the wonderful neck pillow!).

We drove into Interlaken around 9, into GORGEOUS views of mountains and lakes (thanks Jess!!). Because we were pooped from almost no sleep, we spent most of the day sleeping ...
