Slovenia

29C before 9am... so something was bound to happen. when i arrived in ljubljana, the rain came and boy did it ever... slovenia is cool. it has a large northern italy influence and although it's a tad on the "expensive" side for eastern europe, this is definitely a country i'd love to have more time to explore. however, today is still filled with some stress; a bit of the house situation in dublin is lingering about, and now with the news of wha'ts going on between israel and lebanon isn't sit...

Tjraveljing to Ljubljana - When in Doubt, add J's.

<Brian's brief chronological list of "highlights" (and of whinging)> - Caught train to Ljubljana... took about 6 hrs in the end. - Saw the Dragon Bridge (dragons are Ljubljana's mascot) and the Ljubljana Castle (via a funicular)... neither of much excitement really. - There were 3 euro horse burgers for sale, but had already eaten... maybe next time. <Lang's Extended Version> Unbeknownst to us, today was a public holiday in Austria - some religious holiday we had no idea about but...

SLOVENIA

We made to Trieste - Italy, checked in and decided to try and find out our quickest way of getting to Slovenia. It’s not that the town is bad, it’s more that there just isn’t much to see there! Our plan was to get an early bus and be in Ljubljana by midday the following day. Or not. We found from a guide book that the only bus is at 2pm and only one a day. Ok….not good, but still ok. Head off to book bus tickets and find out that the follow...

Lovely Ljubljana

... in the city this arvo and how to get to Lake Bled tomorrow and recommended some places for traditional Slovenian food.
Walked around Ljubljana and went to the castle, town hall and St Nicholas Cathedral all a bit over 3 hours.
It's a pretty compact city.
Castle wasn't anything all that special, but I guess it's the main tourist attraction within the city.
St Nichols Cathedral had amazing frescoes inside - everywhere and also had 2 kick ...

the blog begins...one and a half months in!

... platforms count down the mins until your train will arrive exactly. I stood there wondering how the the author ever came up with running through the walls at the tube station as the entry to Harry Potter land.
I arrived that evening near the Tower of London for the 'Jack the Ripper' Tour through the east end and 'haunted' areas of Londons past. Our tour guide, Charlotte, had a wonderfully morbid humor that went along nicely with the stories ...

A steep ascent...

... as you'd have access to every single flavour, they were quite accommodating when I said I'd like to take away a couple of scoops (coconut and chocolate in case you were wondering) and for €1 a scoop you can't go wrong. An old guy shouted to me in Slovenian that he hoped I wouldn't freeze, which gives you an idea of how lovely the Slovenian people are. A lot of people have said hello to me in the street too, which isn't something I've encountered in a lot of places. I bought a ...

Stunning Slovenia

... After consulting the Lonely Planet for Europe it seemed Slovenia was well worthy of 3-4 days and small enough to see quite a bit of the country, only decision was how to get there the cheapest way. Easyjet fly direct to Ljubljana whilst Ryanair fly to tiny regional airports. We settled on a flight to Klagenfurt, Austria (£10) with Ryanair and a return flight from Ljubljana (£45) with Easyjet. This was the cheapest option available. At the same time I also booked ...

Day 2 in Ljubljana

After rather a long and much needed lie-in, I headed out, the castle (or Grad as they call them in Slovenia) was on the cards today. I took a meander through some little side streets on the way, they were lovely and quaint. Ljubljana has a very relaxed feel about it, which I really like, and although it is not a huge place and doesn't have all the 'attractions' of other cities, it is ...

Sleeping in a cell tonight

... I had the night before was awful... it was a merlot of 1 euro and tasted like cold vinegar... and even though the wine at this wine bar was local to them, it was only 1.25 euro... didnt sound promising. So, I got an Irish Coffee instead. Probably the best Irish coffee I've had... we we both super tired last night, so we were going to just play cards, but ended us falling asleep early which made for an early morning today. We checked out and went to the ...

Adventures with Phil: Part 1

... to have spent so much time with these beautiful women and have remembered nothing of it. I can think of little that would be more terrible. They just had one question for him. "Phil, why is it that the toilet is here," and she used her hands to show the placement of a toilet in front of her, "but you ****** here?" and she used her hands to show where he did the action somewhere to her right. He was terrified with how he behaved and ...
