Our first day in Moscow could have gone better. We were thrown headlong into the frenzy of the Muscovite metro without a clue what we were doing, somehow managing to arrive at the station with the correct sequence of mental hieroglyphics in its name. Then proceeded to get lost a few times, en route to our hostel and town, respectively. Luckily …

There had been talk, or oblique references, to a Russian parkrun back in the uk. Initially, seeing their Facebook page, I was excited, reasoning that I might get to be the first tourist to hit a Russian parkrun, but then spotted that this was unofficial. From that, I figured it was 'borrowing' official logos but otherwise totally different. The …

The chance to stop, second only in importance to the fact that I have made it here. Up at 5.40, plenty of time to go through the (very quick) Moscow airport style security, train at 6.45, hostel by metro by 12 and time to sit for half an hour before going to meet dad. His directions were characteristically excellent so I came out of Dinamo metro- …

WC day 4

I was relaxed about my start today, wanting to get a run in and not get out of bed enormously early. I set off around 8.30 and crossed the river. If the stadium is at the bottom of a U shape caused by the river, the hostel is near top left, so crossing allowed me to run down the left edge all the way to the parkland that borders the 'sparrow hills …

    too many misunderstandings

2 nights in this hostel and they were far from perfect. When I asked for clothes to be washed, I was told by the staff about their laundry procedure. Unfortunately this was their laundry procedure for used bedlinen and not for dirty clothes, so after leaving my laundry as instructed in the basket, I returned later to find my clothes untouched. When I asked a different staff member, she told me of her colleagues error but then said she could do nothing to help as the cleaning lady had gone home. Quite unhelpful. Eventually I persuaded another staff member to open up the room with the washing machine and I managed to get it all done by 11pm. Also there is no wi-fi in the hostel rooms on the 5th floor, only in the hostel reception on the 1st floor. Dorms had 15+ people and seemed too crowded, and included a creepy babushka with some weird personal habits. Not enough toilets or showers to cater for the numbers there
