Goodbye rich coast....

... chaos, so maybe we were just unlucky with the weather, I cant imagine it can always be like that....

Things seem a little cheaper, particularly in the supermarket here, so we are feeling happier. It makes sense things would be expensive in Tortuguero as everything has to be boated in, but the other places dont make sense... its annoying really... and the price of rum is extortionate (its cheaper to buy imported baileys !) - There are so many things to do here too ...

Los Guido, day 2

... actually was a little too and I was invited to join the modified conga line and accepted too for a while. The Ponce family is just SO kind and engaging. I was able to do a little computer consulting. Pastor Edgars family has a new computer and I was able to help them set it up to do some photo processing and viewing. They dont have much computer experience. I show them a few simple things and a big chear would go ...

Still looking for the quetzal

... of the most beautiful tropical bird, about 30cm long. Red chest, green wings and a yellow beak. The male version has a incredible long (60 cm) and beautiful tail. In precolombian societies the quetzal was closely associated with the cult of the plucking snake, the God named Quetzalcoatl. The Indian nobility were in the ...

Day 5 - Monteverde

... was definitely a thrill to be coasting high over the treetops, through clouds and mist at breakneck speed. Toward the beginning I got stuck on two of the zip lines, the first time I climbed backwards, arm over arm to the platform and the second, a guide came out and got me. After ten or so zip lines we arrived at the Tarzan swing, which is essentially a rope tied to a tree and a platform for you to jump off of. It looked THRILLING. I wasted no time hopping up on the ...

Day 4 - Monteverde

... and had seafood. The conversation was diverse, we discussed politics and health care. Its always interesting to hear the opinions of foreigners with regard to American politics. Hillary was a crowd favorite. I think Sean and I were quite embarrassed when after discussing U.S. politics for a solid half an hour, they asked if Debbie, Sean, or I could name the Canadian leadership. None of us could. Then it was back to the hotel where Sean, Debbie and I had ...

Rauskuja ja rommia pullo

... luukulta hakemassa ja täyttämässä lomakkeet (eli kuten myöhemmin selvisi leimaamassa itsemme ulos). Vielä kaksi kertaa kävimme näyttämässä ulosmenoleimojamme sisään -luukulla kunnes joku ymmärsi viittoa meidät jo Costa Rican suuntaan. Jälkeenpäin ajateltuna olivat tullimiehet oikeastaan hyvinkin mukavia ja pitkämielisiä. Jossain vaiheessa passeja tutkiessamme sillä tajusimme, että passeistamme puuttuu kokonaan sisääntuloleima Nicaraguaan ja tästä voisi ...

Tortuguero

... myself. Although the high season for egg laying was 2 months ago, I can see I am virtually guaranteed to witness the experience of an endangered turtle laying eggs. It only happens every 4 years, apparently. Just before heading to the internet café, a couple local school girls hit me up for a donation. I made her promise she would email me pictures of the school and community center that the funds are due to go ...

From the Rain Forest to the Cloud Forest

... tropical rainforest. We had a Tropical Fruit Workshop this afternoon, and it was a bunch of fruits for us to taste and try! Yum! Fresh coconut, papaya, mango, green mango, passionfruit (looks like boogers), banana, plantain, and a lot more that I've never even seen before! Well, thanks for listening, and I hope all is well on the home-front! Thanks for your emails, I like hearing about your summers, too!

Limon Costa Rica

... even worse then Costa Maya, however, as soon as you leave the port area, Costa Rica is STUNNING!! Costa Rica is very humid and hard, the weather is a bit similar to durban, however they are in a rain forest, everything is very very green. They have renamed there seasons to make it more tourist friendly, there is no more summer season and rainy season, its now summer season and green season. The main export of Costa Rica is (believe it or not) micro chips for ...
