Campeche and Palenque - Doubling Back
In order to cross the border from Frontera Corozal in Mexico to Bethel in Guatemala, we had to backtrack, thus staying another night in Campeche and Palenque respectively. After a five hour journey on two buses from Piste via Merida we were glad to arrive in Campeche around mid-afternoon. It felt quite comforting to be arriving in a place that we …
Campeche, Mexico--Hot after the mountains
We have descended down into the coastal plain where it is hot and humid. I think we didn´t properly appreciate the weather in the mountains. We´ve spent most of the day trying to evade the heat & humidity which meant going out for an hour or two and then spending some time in the nice AC in our room. The bus ride from Palenque was pretty comfy …
Campeche City Tour
Finally got to Campeche around 11am. Very long bus ride but survived. Took the local bus to the city wall then walked into the city to the plaza where the Monkey Hostal is hidden. For doorms very crowded 100M per night. There is a nicer hostel by the 12+57 Callewhich is 95M and includes breakfast. Campeche is a small town full of colored houses, …
Uxmal to Campeche
Today we caught an early bus to Uxmal, Mayan ruins. We got there and put our packs in storage for the day so we could explore the ruins. Our plan was to catch a bus later that day to Campeche. Following a map in the Lonely Planet we headed into the ruins, they are amazing, we were able to climb to the top of a bunch of them. The views from the top …

This wasn't our best experience as hostels go. After choosing the room with the best window for air and paying for the night, we discovered that the door could be pushed open even when it was locked. WARNING, refunds will NOT be given even if they are at fault, when we complained about the door he just shrugged! After digging our heels in, we were offered another room (that was a bit stuffy) and a free breakfast to compensate which we accepted. Glad we didn't pay for the breakfast though was it was just some fruit. Oh and they were out of gas but were offered the use of a one burner electric hob.

I chose this hostel because it was the Lonely Planet´s pick. It must have changed somewhat since their visit because I found the staff neither bilingual nor, more importantly, friendly. I specifically asked for a woman´s only dorm, only for the guy on the desk to show a very drunk Mexican man in at 4am. The guest turned out to be harmless, but it was more the principle. There were no computers either. Most rooms were unused and run down. It´s redeeming feature was the view of the Plaza.
