... swim in. We went into town but because it was Sunday everything was closed. We went back to the lake and found out where all the people were. It was very crowded and every second person had a small bbq. There was that many bbqs that the air was thick with smoke, talk about smoke on the water. It was a little disappointing but with nothing open I suppose the locals and tourists all end up at the lake. ...

4th July

Another really hot day (over 30 degrees).

After another big buffet breakfast we caught the Golden Pass Express which is a train trip through the alps from Lucerne to Montreux. There are three legs, each of between one and two hours, the first of which finishes at Interlaken, a smallish town on a lake.

... wanted to hear before beginning what was planned to be the longest and most arduous bit of trekking on our itinerary.

We decided to mull it over during dinner. Fondue, of the famed L'etivaz, accompanied by dried and peppered beef and a couple glasses of wine. Meringue for dessert and a conversation with the woman running the hotel finalized our decision. We would not make the trek as planned. When we settled into bed the first rain began to fall.

... that the monks have run since round the 1100's. Ths is where the St Bernards dog story comes from - they used the dogs to take people across the pass and find them when they got lost. Down the Swisss side of the pass to lake Geneva,and back into France. Stopped at a lovely parkon the lake for a swim .. and decided to just stay in the carpark ...
