Shanghai (more to follow keep check back)
I left my apartment in tiny Xiasha (population 600,000) and caught a bus to famous "Wulin Square" in Hangzhou. "Wulin Square" is the center of a beautiful city of 8 million and the buildings are quite impressive. I hung around the square for an hour while waiting on the special "Pudong Bus" that talkes one to the airport of the same name in …
Shanghai-ed
Shanghai struck us as an odd place at first, mostly because of its unexpected familiarity in a land envisioned as foreign, exotic, challenging. It's name, once synonymous with sin, intrigue and adventure, deceived its newly clean-shaven, straight-laced self, at least upon first impression. Arriving via wonderfully efficient public transportation ( …
Shanghai
Getting there (Ben) So we got lost in Glasgow looking for the shelter for the night. We insist it was only due to the lack of pavements between the airport and hotel area however admittedly this was not the greatest start to our trip. 20 minutes into the hunt I could see Jenn's stress levels going through the roof. Clearly the weight of her bag was …
Day 2: Shanghai- Chinese New York
Day 2- Shanghai
Shanghai! Finally, Shanghai. I had given up hope of going to Shanghai. I thought that it was too far, maybe 15-20 hours by train, or too expensive. I was excited about this trip, but especially excited to see Shanghai. I had heard good things. My first roommate said that it was clean and beautiful. My first manager said that it …
Shanghai
After a fair amount of trouble, we managed to get tickets to Shanghai. We found our hostel and then bummed around in the city for a while waiting for Dave to show up. The city is completely different than Xi'an. It's like travelling through a time machine forward about 70 years. There are big, modern, buildings. There are skyscrapers. There are …

It's the real estate salesman's cry. "Position, position, position" but it really is true. A couple of streets from The Bund and Nanjing Rd East, the shopper's mecca, this place really is handy, convenient, comfortable and reasonable, although I have met friendlier staff but thyy're generally in the country. As I said, I'm going back there again for a second stay

The place is clean and the staff are very helpful. They have been turning people away all day cos they are full. The place was very noisey at night.

Looks like an excellent, clean, well-ran hostel for the most part. After reading the excellent reviews I doubt my opinion will change much. The building was built in 1931 and the orgininal facade and wooden floors, stairways, and other amenities is like a step back in time. (more to come)

Clean hostel but the rooms are a joke, far too small and the walls are paper thin. Dont expect to get much sleep in this place or a lie in past 7.30.
The cafe downstairs is open to the public so arent able to eat and drink your own stuff. Staff were pretty grumpy and not much help with local info.
Free internet and cheap washer. Y8 only. Y8 again to dry.
Would probably look for another in future but i guess you get what you pay for.

compared to so many other locations in Shanghai, this area rocks! The Mingtown is one of the more trendy hostels in People's Square. (Beware of the Tea House salesman - very friendly con artist with great English). Other hostels are also nice, but maybe in boring run-down areas. Ed
