Valparaiso (& Viña del Mar)

So I felt like taking a couple of days to travel out of Santiago and decided on the Valparaiso and Viña del Mar combo (Valpo & Viña). Off I went to the main bus station to choose one of the companies for by 1.5 hour trip out to the coast. The two big competing bus companies to these destinations are Tur & Pullman. Pedro from my hostel said that although Tur have much nicer buses, they also have many more accidents, two of which he was part of! So my choice was easy...go for comfort.. ...

Dia 1 - Llegamos a Valparaíso

... lie on little plateaus. The major streets go up and down, with "paseos" occasionally connecting them. Streets stop and start randomly--or rather they stop and start because the topography dictates. You really need to know where you are going, or have a good map. I ended up with four maps--every time I asked directions, I got a different one. Cerro Concepcion is a very artsy neighborhood with lots of cute shops and cafes--quite ...

Vamos a la playa

... The importance of the Navy in Chile can't be overseen in Valparaiso - dozens of incedibly beautiful buildings belonging to different naval departments document that.

Happy, Happy New Year!

We encounters people from all walks of life from the individualistic / must be different punks to hippies selling all sorts of junk/jewellery, to vagrants who clearly spent more time than most in the parks, to gracious old gents playing cards on rickety wooden tables. And lastly, the parks, in fact whole city was ...

A la playa - Vina del Mar

... 8 bucks. 8 bucks for a trip to Vina...an hour an a half away! Now, this isn't some shady bus either. They are really nice charter buses with tvs and everything. I was really impressed. Once we arrived there were cab drivers everywhere and they took us straight to the hotel (where I had asked a Chilean friend at work to make our reservation...hey, my Spanish is okay, but it's not that good!). We stayed at Hotel Agora and it ...
