Oi!

That is portuguese for hello, not me being rude, as some uncultured people would think. See we're native brazillian now. Besides having tanned so much we are beginning to be on the dirty side of brown closer to mud colour (as opposed to a nice bronzed 'glow'), we have assimilated into Rio life so well we now are besties with allll …

Back To Rio.

Our trip back to Rio from Ilha Grande was booked as a "Speed connection" the day before we were to travel. Sounded like a good idea as the brochure promoted a fast looking boat and a late model bus that would take us right to our hostel. In reality it was a much older boat than we arrived on and the bus was a crowded transit bus with no air …

Roving Rio

What better place to start a trip to Brazil than in its most famous and infamous city, Rio de Janeiro. We spent 7 days traveling around the city partying with locals and taking all Rio had to offer. The only thing I regret is not having more time to spend in Rio, I could have spent all five weeks of my trip in this city and still not experienced …

Touch down in Rio

A travel blog entry by laura-tom

We have arrived in Rio safe and sound, and celebrated with some local beverage...Caprihnas!!!

First few days have consisted of getting to know the place - walking the long beaches, swimming at impenema and moto taxi to the top of Vigical Favella (one of the bigest in Brazil). Admired the stunning scenery and sampled some locaL food.

I was a little apprehensive about Rio. I was ready for Brazil to be over and longed for Colombia. After my encounters in Salvador I didn't have the energy to deal with another city that was out to get me, but I tried not to carry any preconceptions of the place before giving it a chance.

The taxi ride form the airport put a grin on my …

    Could be better

This hostel was in a perfect location in Copacabana. The people were cool and it was only 5 minute walk to the beach. This place would be five stars in my book if the owners and staff put in a little more effort. Showers were dirty and rooms were over priced for the condition. Payed 25R/night for an 18 person dorm room. A little pricey in my book for such a lack of privacy.

Could do with a serious overhaul

I arrived after the reception had closed and was greeted by a security guard who was not given any info about guests arriving for the night or which bed they were supposed to stay in, so even though I had booked a 10 bed, I was put in a 15 bed for the first night. In the morning I went to reception only to be told that they don't even have 10 bed dorms. It took a lot of arm twisting to get them to put me in a 6 bed dorm (as I wasn't gonna pay the extra to stay in a 15 bed).

The whole place is filthy, especially the bathrooms/showers. The bar is ok but not a very comfortable. The free breakfast is heavily regulated, you may have one piece of ham, one piece of cheese and one piece of fruit. Coffee regularly runs out and is not topped up. I can't recommend this place.
