... before buying tickets to start a tour at 9am. The inside is just magnificent, so huge and with the most beautiful tiles and carvings. The roof even opens on special occasions. The tour was very informative - we went downstairs to the washrooms and hammam, and the guide explained the washing process. When the tour finished we got a taxi (took a while to find one, then explain where we wanted to go and negotiate ...

Meknes

Had the morning in Meknes, so we took a taxi out to see the roman ruins at Volubilis. Much like the Forum in Rome except about 100 times less people which gave you a chance to actually visualise what the buildings might have looked like. Beautiful mosaics depicting various roman gods were in some of the ruins. Highlights were the arch, the public toilets - more communal toilets where they would meet ...

Past Glory

... admirer of Louis XIV and set about building an imperial city in Meknes to rival the Palace of Versailles. He had Christian slaves and local tribesman labour for years on his palace complex, surrounded by massive defensive walls. Following his death, his city fell into ruins, and it was these ruins, which have undergone 20th century restoration, which we visited in Meknes. Volubulis, 30km North of Meknes, is the site of the most extensive Roman ruins in Morocco ...

Medina Maze In Medievil Imperial City

... guys who speak some English charge very little but take you to see some sights and to some shops where they get commissions. We had arrived at a good time, about an hour before the Moroccans broke their Ramadan fast for the day which meant there was a buzz in the air and food carts and vendors were competing for space to sell food to everybody in the city. Despite young guides who were trying to get us to go to their hotels telling us our choice in hotel was bad, we ...

... wide, and a labyrinth of thousands of lanes and alleys, many leading to dead-ends (it is the largest car-free zone in the world). It's amazingly intimate - it's virtually completely lined with shops, trades, workshops (many only a metre wide and 2 deep, filled with 5 or 6 people working away), people sitting on the ground selling vegetables, herbs, chickens, etc. It's cooler in there than outside as the sun is filtered through a light covering of timber slatting, cane mats, etc and it ...

Back from Morocco

... We awoke early and had a coffee at a people watching cafe. We found an "official" guide and decided on a price of 150 Durhams (about $16) for a four hour guided tour through the very challenging Medina. One could end up passing a couple of birthdays in such a labyrinth. You can go to youtube on the Internet and search for the Medina at fez Morocco and take a tour yourself. The guide was very informative and gave us more facts and ...

... scents of donkeys and their excrement in the streets. Our guided visit to Fez began with a stop at the entrance to the Royal Palace, the Dar El-Makhzen, Fez being one of Morocco's four imperial cities. Our palace tour, though, only went as far as gazing at the glittery gold doors and zelij-tiled facade, since the palace is still used as a residence by the royal family. It was then on to Borj Sud, a hilltop fortress south of the old city ...

On s'arrête manger à El Hajeb. C'est ...
