Ushuaia is as far south as most people go in South America...or indeed anywhere. Further south (just) is Isla Navarino (cold and expensive to get to), Cape Horn (a rock, to all intents and purposes) and then the Antarctic (tours are extortionate). So most people make it as far as Ushuaia because the southness/cost trade off is acceptable despite there being very little there :-)
I decided to fly down here because it was about the same price as the bus, days faster and to enjoy the view...
So sad to leave this winter wonderland in October! Ushuaia, Patagonia aka Tierra Del Fuego aka Earth of Fire aka fin del mundo aka end of the world! This little town 1000km from Antartica (600 miles) brought much happiness to my life. What a magnificent place. Where the Atlantic ocean meets the Pacific ocean and the mountains soar up from the water. I will be back.
My love for Ushuaia started the minute we landed. The snow capped mountains, the invigorating water, the chill in the air ...
Well I thought I would write a little bit while I still remember. I have loads of pictures to upload from here and the last blog but will wait until i am on a faster and more reliable computer! We are now down in Ushuaia (the worlds most southern city). You can buy stuff everywhere saying that you are at the end of the world or 'fin del mundo' as they say. But I have to admit it doesn't really feel like it. I think I thought I would look out to sea and see nothing but we are surrounded by mou...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina louiseharrisUshuaia, week 2, part 1 With a little extra spring in my step I'm off to find the Spanish school Finis Terrae. I'm getting kind of excited about the prospect of lessons and getting a leg up on the language. It turns out to be only a few blocks away and only a five minute walk. I rang the bell and was let in to what was a very casual and comfortable reception and living room like area. The decor was simple and rustic and felt like a log cabin. I introduced my self and stated my purpose for bei...
Ushuaia, Argentina nomadn8 With an empasis on the CHILLING! The gear we have brought form London has no effect what so ever on the antarctic breeze but we stand our ground refusing to buy more woolly things as we only need it for about a week. Layering is the name of the game...the backpacks are empty now because we are wearing just about every item we have!
Most of this leg of the trip was pre-booked at our hostel in Buenos Aires...all except the flight we had to catch because we missed a connection bus due to...

... them as a glamourous catamaran edged towards the island and stopped while people swarmed to one side of the boat and had to snap away at the penguins from a distance. It was bloody cold though. We were just in time to see the penguins before they migrated either back to Antarctica or further up the Argentinian coast. We left Ushaia and travelled on to El Calafate with 3 others we had met in our hostel on our most random bus journey yet...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina emashily... other hand do yourself a favour and avoid the Los Lupinos hostel at any cost. The food was great too with a good selection of bakeries and the sandwich restaraunt that never failed to please, La Martinica. Oh how I'll miss your milanesa pollo completa (chicken schnitzel topped with tomato, cheese, ham and a fried egg) when I'm eating guinea pig in Peru. The beagle channel was nice, although ...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina shortyesquire... on the hard boiled eggs, bread and snickers we had brought in. Plus the cold sandwich from the cafe. However, on the last day we managed to catch the BBQ and enjoyed a huge steak sandwich. Ushuaia is a nice place to spend a few days but quite expensive. Think most people come through on their to Antartica and it is full of people walking around in North Face and Columbia jackets, fleeces and walking boots!! Left Ushuaia on the 1st ...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina louiseharris... slow, and they agreed. We then met up with a couple other Israeli friends, and off we went! They all were traveling after having completed their army assignment...but after hiking with them for a few minutes, I got the impression that they donīt make all the Israeli soldiers march too much! The girls were all quite slow, which was good for my health and ...
Ushuaia, Patagonia, Argentina annapriester... hit us, and the boat suddenly turned into a very small and wet roller coaster! At 1 point we nearly turned back, but the crew got through the rough seas and we hit calmer waters once we neared the island we were too visit (although I now realise I am not built for the sea, and am better suited to the land). We had an enjoyable walk around H island (so called as it looks like a rather fat H from the air), and the guide told us about the wildlife and the history of the ...
