Borneo: A Walk on the Wild Side

Before we arrived, Borneo conjured up two images in my mind: jungles and orangutans. It didn't fail to deliver on both counts and left us with many more memories besides.

What I didn't expect in Borneo was the attractive, clean and relatively modern city of Kuching, with its posh waterfront promenade and eye-catching buildings. This …

In our last blog entry I mentioned that Sabah is considered the nature state, whilst Sarawak has more of the culture but we must have been lucky because we have seen so much nature and so many unique wild animals to Borneo in Sarawak.

We had thought that a good way to get introduced to the wildlife in Borneo before going into the jungle …

Long Houses, Tribal Dancing and Head Hunters

There are two states in Malaysian Borneo, Sarawak and Sabah. Sabah is said to be the place to see Borneo's nature whilst Sarawak has more of the cultural heritage (although it has a lot of nature as well). We spent ages to-ing and fro-ing over which place to go but in the end costs led us to Sarawak, especially as we weren't planning on diving in …

I slept surprisingly well considering the 8 hour time difference. Even managing to get up to catch a 7.15am bus to Semenggoh.

Semenggoh is the location of the orang-utan wildlife centre. It was set up in 1975 to care for wild orang-utans which were found injured in the forest, orphaned, or previously …

Hi

We are going to Bako National park today, so another early start at 5.50am as we need to catch the 7.00am bus. We wouldn't be so tired if some idiot hadn’t decided to start playing his stupid guitar and singing really loudly right outside our room at 22.45 when we wanted to go to sleep! You can imagine where we wanted to stick his …

Excellent accomodation, very friendly and helpful owners who gave us a map as soon as we arrived and explained where to get the buses to all the places we wanted to go to e.g bako national park and the orang utan centre. Nice toilets with soap and toilet paper. Room with air con was very clean and comfortable bed. Breakfast was toast with peanut butter and bananas on some days.
