Set off for Gizzy or Gisbourne via Whakatane but we liked the look of Whakatane so we decided to stay here for a night. Lovely sunny day in the 30's. We find a nice motel - The Cortez - with a pool and a nice courtyard. We check in and then go to the beach (it is actually a river mouth) for a sit and read, with a beer. It is beautiful and quiet. Last night we had a real adventure - we went to the bay of islands very late in the afternoon, only to find that the only place we could stay was a 'one star' pub... It was horrific but we had nowhere else to go.
