Set off for Gizzy or Gisbourne via Whakatane but we liked the look of Whakatane so we decided to stay here for a night. Lovely sunny day in the 30's. We find a nice motel - The Cortez - with a pool and a nice courtyard. We check in and then go to the beach (it is actually a river mouth) for a sit and read, with a beer. It is beautiful and quiet. Enjoyed a coffee and florentine at Penny's cafe. Then back to the motel, more reading, ...

On our way out, we got to see the ganetts. These birds nest there and take what we called 'the leap of faith', i.e. Their first flight just by jumping out of the cliff and fly all the way to Australia, for those who make it, stay there 2 or 3 years then come back to the white island.

... this involved a very long breakfast. Then our rooms had all checked out and we got on to cleaning them. Which really doesn't take the four of us long to do at all. In we go and I get 2 T-shirts at a massive $2 each, Becky doesn't quite get the hang of not spending money, but a jumper and T-shirt coming it at $20 for the pair is still acceptable I guess!
