Ushuaia

Arrived into Ushuaia airport at around midday. Very cold but beautiful. Hostel is really near to the airport. Nice and clean place with 2 kitchens and the receptionist was friendly and helpful. We wandered in to town, had a lovely dinner in Marco Polo restaurant and went for a drink in Dublin, Ushuaia´s Irish pub that had the best reccommendations from other travellers and locals that I´ve spoken to. Being Paddy´s day, I expected a bit of a knees up and indeed the pub was packed with plenty o...

Beagle Channel boat trip

It was snowing this morning when we woke up! Having booked our flight to El Calafate last night for tonight, we knew we only had today to do our boat trip, and after looking outside and seeing the snow falling it looked a bit ominous for both the boat trip and the flight. The guy who was at reception in the hostel informed us it would likely be ok, because being the most southerly town in the world, Ushuaia is well prepared for snow, and it being their summer, it would be no problem!

... back and had lunch in town and will probably relax a bit before going back down to the main street for dinner later. One thing we realized the last couple of days is that we were woefully underprepared for the weather down here. It is cold and we did not bring enough to combat it! Of course, most of the places we were going were warmer, but still. I think before we leave tomorrow we are going to go buy gloves and hats. We still have some cold weather ...

They seemed to have a layer of fat under their skins that made this possible, and they also made prodigious use of fire, always keeping one going, even carrying burning coals on a clay try in their canoes. It is from Magellan´s seeing the shore lit of with their bonfires that Tierra del Fuego, Land of Fire, got its name. Further up-island were the Selk'Nam, people of statuesque build that hunted the guanaco. They ...

CHAPTER 2: YOU SAY PAMPAS, I SAY NAPPIES

... gravel road stretch to the ferry at San Sebastian. Taking all the precautions we deflate the tyres for gravel riding, and the bikes feel right at home. Getting off the highway and onto the smaller roads and something clicks - great scenery dotted with little tin settlers sheds, rusty wind mills cranking in the breeze. This feels like more of an adventure now. After nearly 3000km on Ruta 3 I feared I was becoming a spoiled traveler, not finding the joy of being on the road in ...
