Boards and bikes

I think we last jotted down a little story just after arriving in Huacachina, while we were waiting to go sandboarding. And wasnīt the sandboarding fun! You get strapped into these almost turbo-afied dune buggies, with a semi-insane driver up front, and you go flying up and down these massive sand dunes (leaving your stomach at the top of half of them). Every now and then the driver would stop at the top of a dune, and we would all stumble out the sides, and lay claim to a piece of wood that ...

Another White City and a deeeeep Canyon...

So onto another over night bus from Cusco to Arequipa, this time trying out the slightly more expensive but recommended company Cruz del Sur….within half an hour on the bus we found ourselves playing bingo with rest of the passengers! Very exciting, plus we had blankets and tea, what a company!

We arrived in Arequipa at 6.30am to then get a taxi to a hostel, we hadn't booked but lied to the taxi driver otherwise they take you where they want... Interestingly a police woman took o...

Taste of altitude

We arrived in Arequipa quite early and had to wait for our bedroom at the hostel. They had a nice sunny terrace to wait on so we relaxed for a bit before checking in. At 2400m I could feel the altitude to relaxing was the thing to do. We had a nap when we checked into our room and breathing involved more effort than normal, especially as I still had a chesty cough. We didn't do much that day. We met up with a German couple that we met in Nazca and whom were on the same bus as us. We arranged ...

More mummies...this time frozen!

Stayed in Arequipa from Thursday until Saturday at this hostel www.laposadadelcacique.com It was OK, but now (Sunday), I have taken with me numerous mozzie bites as a souvenir. They are in the strangest places too...palm side of my left arm, and around the soles of my feet...which are on fire, as itīs right where the shoes rub! On the overnight bus to Cusco (which is where I am now, Iīm just a bit behind with these stories!) any of the locals who saw me must have thought I was mad...everyone ...

Blame It On The Altitude

First off, we survived! The bus was not at all as bad as we thought it would be. We took a taxi to the bus station, which cost approximately $2. A bit of advice: getting into a taxi with your pack on is not a good idea. We had heard that the bus line we took, Cruz del Sur, was the safest because they videotaped everyone. We thought this meant that they had a camera on the bus. Wrong. They literally go up and down the aisles taping everyone, so in case someone decides to hijack the bus, they ...

The White City and Mount Misti.

... it.
At it was these views that i needed to remind myself of on the bus ride back from Cabanaconde to Arequipa, which proved itself to be even worse that the busride there, with locals filling the aisles, again those bumpy gravel roads, and rather than the music, this time our ears were filled with the bad sound quality of a dubbed 1970´s war movie. Fun times.
Nevertheless we did manage to make it back in one piece, finding our hostel to have some more guests, mostly ...

Colca Canyon and Santa Catalina

... they're incredibly clever and unbelievable strong, know exactly what they're supposed to do, know how to pick the right steps up the insanely horrible stone steps. I was just speechless, and at the same time, felt bad for the poor animals for needing to drag our asses up - but we were told they're very used to this climbing, since it's the only way for the locals to get to town - up. And the mules with them.

For dinner, we got FINALLY a little ...
