The Day After

A slow morning saw us arrive in A caruna around 2:30p for a quick tour. A beautiful city where we had an excellent lunch (more kids running through the streets while we devoured raciones and wine. Yum!!) A 6ish departure for our long drive to Llanes in Astoria. We finally arrived (kids asleep except Dami who is a night owl) after midnight. Oops ...

"Um, are you planning to sleep tonight"

We woke up to find ourselves at a very local place. It was the beach the folks from a caruna come to to get away from the city. And most (as in everyone but us) of the people there had "summer" campers. So we made like locals and enjoyed the beach, Everett doing some sunrise yoga. We later planned to go into a caruna for a day trip but thought b...

Next stop A Caruna...

Our day went very much according to plan. Nice!! A morning enjoying Sao Joao de P. with pastries and coffee and strolling the tiny streets. An on time depature had us in Santiago de Compostela by 3:30 after enjoying the amazing country side. A quick tour of the amazing cathedral (including real "pilgrims") we were back on the road to A Caruna wh...

Galicia day 2!

We woke up this morning quite chilly and saw that it was also misty out... my favorite weather! I am liking Galicia ever more. After a pretty typical Spanish breakfast of super strong coffee with milk, dry cracker/cookie things and fruit, we got on a bus for a 2.5 hour ride out to San Andres de Teixido. I would have loved the scenic drive, but I...

Galicia, day 1!

We left early this morning for the airport to fly to Galicia, in the north-west corner of Spain. Before our lecture, the only thing I knew about Galicia was that Santiago de Compostela (more on that later) was up there somewhere, and that it was full of scenery, so I can't say I was that excited. Once our plane touched down and we felt how much ...

The world oldest operating lighthouse in A Coruña

We left Bilbao Spain yesterday for a 19 hour cruise along the Spanish coast of the Bay of Biscayne. This rugged coast is scattered with cliffs, small beaches, fishing villages and many hills. Being aboard was a great chance to catch up with my grandmother and to hear how my family was doing back in California.

We arrived in A Coruña in ...

A promise kept

A deep sleep ... I didn't want to wake up from such serene slumber ... 7 solid hours - way better than the 3-4 I've been averaging the past couple of weeks. It was much needed, but I needed even more - unfortunately the insane backpacker within reared his ugly head and dragged me out of bed so that I could get this trip started!

Off to...

A Coruna

Today we visited A Coruna, it is most famous for the Torre de Hercules.  It is the world's oldest functioning lighthouse, it was built in the 2nd century.  Legend has it that Hercules slew the giant Gerion here and buried his head where the tower now stands.  When we got there they were closing up and the first man we spoke with did not want to ...
