Spanish lessons in Sucre

Dolce Vita Hostal, Sucre, Bolivia (80 Bs)
Very hot considering we're almost at 3000 metres

Last known destination Samaipata with the intention of cycling to Sucre when everything went a bit wonky for a while. Dave set about fixing his back brake that I had managed to damage dropping my bike onto it, at which point he discovers his rim has a huge crack in it, so much so that he can't pump his tyre up to maximum as it starts to bow out. not good when you know the...

Hostal Dolce Vita, Sucre, Bolivia

Absolutely perfect

There was me, thinking I'd have plenty of time to do my blog once we settled in somewhere to do our Spanish lessons. It hasn't quite worked out that way. Our lessons are in the afternoon, 2.30 to 6.30, so we've got into a bit of a routine. After breakfast (papaya, yogurt and muesli) the morning is spent doing homework, and going over what we've done the day before. About 12, we go to the market where ...

Dolce Vita Hostal, Sucre, Bolivia

sunny and warm

Friday the 13th turned out to be a good day after all, even the games night at the school was fun. I didn't completely disgrace myself by imbibing of too much vodka and I even shone a little bit when it came to the egg and spoon race (yes, it still goes on in educated circles). Afterwards we all adjourned to The Amsterdam Bar (does what it says on the tin) where we shared some beer and good conversation t...

The most beautiful colonial city weŽve seen.

Well, the journey here was eventful! I overexaggerate , but the first 30 mions were the scariest moments of the trip so far. As we climbed the hill to get out of Uyuni the drive stalled the engine. This put us into a 2 metre slide backwards heading towards a drop that weŽd not want to go over. His brakes seemed to be failing and it was one of those heart in mouth times. His brakes caught and we thought it was cool. he tried but couldnŽt start the engine and it seemed that to do this he releas...

Budding triathletes? (Floss)

Having said goodbye to Viks on Saturday as she returned to Blighty, Helen & I flew to Sucre, Bolivia´s capital, just in time to see the last 10 mins of Eng v Oz - wasn´t I glad I made the effort!! I hope the Northern Hemisphere teams show some improvements over the next couple of games...

Anyway, after a disappointing visit to a local market on Sunday, I persuaded Helen we should ...

... descended out of the clouds and it was actually quite warm. The paintings were impressive and we were the only ones there which made it even better.
On the way out we came across the guard carrying his son out to hospital - makes you realise how spoilt we are when he has to carry his son for a couple of hours to get to the road and then to travel another couple of hours to Sucre....we gave them a lift in our car which ...

... we were happy with but we needed to borrow a pot. We did our best to convey this (which involved using the dictionary for the word pot) but it was all really very ambigous. Lorenza and Maxina were going to bring us some meals, for which we agreed to give them 10 bolivians per meal, and possibly bring us a pot also. We arranged with the teachers that we would start music in the school the next morning.
Felipe was helping us get settled and gave us a ...

We´re not in Argentina anymore!

... She did look on us with pity as she dragged her bag through our sleeping quarters to a nice comfy seat as us gringo´s were left to slum it on the dirty wet floor. It was devestating bit believe it or not I actually took the whole episode quite calmly, I simply laid down and set my bag as a pillow and prayed there were not weak bladdered people on the bus as a toilet stop would require a complete evacuation as the aisles were so narrow. I did struggle to get comfortable as my pockets ...

... of the exploring of Sucre until Wednesday when the sun was shining again :) That night we headed out for a few drinks and a nice meal, determined to check out the nightlife. We ended up in a bar recommended by our bibles (lonely planet and footprints), although we had to wake the barman to get served, so not exactly a lively night!!!!

On Wednesday we headed up a hill for a viewpoint. A summary of Sucre

... as during the Salt Flats trip I had come to realise that in every photo taken against a light background, there was a dark seagull-shaped piece of dirt in the bottom left. Every sodding photo. I can only assume that the bloke who removed the sand from my camera in Arequipa negligently allowed this horror to happen, meaning that on my return I´ll have the best part of a hundred photos that need retouching to remove the aforementioned menace. Anyway, the shop was run by a Japanese couple ...
