Santa Marta party then Tagonga (party)

A travel blog entry by mattheeley on Jul 10, 2014

Santa Marta proper Apart from a dodgy burger and small ropy beach I haven't a lot to say about Santa Marta. This is probably because we spent the night partying in the hostel, La Brisa Loca, and headed off first thing in the morning to Tagonga. We'd heard there wasn't much to do in Santa Marta itself so planning a drive through, and to be honest …

Taganga, scuba time

I left the boys in Medellin as I was desperate to reach the beaches. Taganga is a small fishing town on the northern Caribbean coast next to the larger city of Santa Marta. I have gone from one extreme to the other, Taganga has minimal paved streets, instead rubble leads the way up most of the six or so streets that make up this town. It's really …

Chill out time in Taganga

We felt we deserved some fun relaxation time after our hard work in the jungle so we high-tailed it out of Santa Marta the second we got back and headed to Taganga. Found a lovely hostel and went off down the town for some food and a few drinks. After meeting up with the Aussies, Dutch, French and Irish from the trek a few drinks turned to many and …

Enjoying a Colombian Fishing Village

A travel blog entry by jeffwright on Oct 04, 2013

I met Philipp and Anna in in Taganga, at Casa de Filipe, a place they found online. In Taganga we enjoyed some Colombian beers, walking on the beach, laying on the hostel's hammocks, and eating delicious Colombian food. I also met a recent ASU graduate from Sedona who was traveling with her friend from Utah.

After one night and a half-day …

They really need to add mosquito nets to the windows and consider cooking affordable dinners. Other than that, decent place.

Great place to spend Christmas. The dorms are clean, and the common areas are really big and great to meet people in. I have already recommended this place to many other travelers

The most amazing food ive ever seen in a hostel. its a little pricey but for twice the price of a bland plato del dia, this is mouth watering cusine from a French chef. The hostel itself is a little walk to the 'town' and not so clean beach. plenty of hammocks and areas to relax. nice kitchen to cook your food (plenty of oven space) and some very friendly colombian staff. Beds are clean and air conditioning and fans are great. No pool, but meh...

    Worth it!

I stayed approximately 8 nights in the Casa de Felipe in Dec 2011.
I tried to make a reservation before and therefor wrote an email but did not get any answer. Thinking this might be alright though, I stood in front of a locked front gate when I arrived at 22:30 h a few days later an the watchmn did not want to let me in because he were fully booked. Thanks to other nice colombian guests who insisted to let me in an who gave me a spare bed in their apartment (they were so nice!) I did not have to sleep under a bridge. Beware: the reception is closed at 9 pm.
The next day they had space and gave me a dorm bed in only a three-bed room which ws really nice.
Good beds, nice and helpful staff and excellent food and jugos in their restaurant (opened from wednesday to sunday), a beautifuk garden with hammocks, good WiFi connection nearly everywhere, two free PCs an a nice roof terrace.
In between I have been off for trekking to the Ciudad Perdida, for these days I could leave my belongings in their storage room which seemed well looked for. When I came back I was put in a eight-beds-dorm with a shower and a separate toilet. The staff gave new toilet paper to us every day and emptied the bins, occasionally they put new sheets on the beds. But when so many people are sharing the same bathroom and toilet, this should be cleaned every day, the shower sometimes was really disgusting (but it might depend on the peaple too, you are sharing the room with...).
For 25.000 COP absolutely worth it!

This was the main recomendation I got from lots of people for Taganaga and it pretty much lived up to expectations. First I stayed in a terraced dorm for COP16,000 and then I shared a five-bed `apartment´ with kitchenette for COP20,000. Great food at the restaurant open Wed-Sun. Only worry I heard of was muggings occuring on the walk from the beach to Case de Felipe. It did not happen to me but something to bear in mind.
