Party nights and Paradise.

Escaping the heat of Cartagena, and with less than a week left in Colombia we headed north to Santa Marta, finding ourselves a hostel recommended by pretty much everyone we had met in the previous few weeks. And it turned out to be quite the eventful evening. Starting with some dinner by the beach, we then returned to the hostel set for a few rum and cokes both at the bar for happy hour and on our own down by the pool... and as it turned out we had arrived on what was to be a fairly big party...

Day 2

... in front of us and no clouds in the sky. But eventually, I finally started to get the feel of the boat and it was fine. Once the afternoon hit, so did the waves. They just got bigger and stronger and kept slamming onto the upper deck and sometimes into the cockpit. I went down below to make lunch and it only took me about 10 minutes to make lunch today because right after I started scooping the tuna salad onto the bread I literally felt ...

3) London: To be honest, I miss London so much more than Australia. Even though I am in Columbia right now, seeing, on a hammock overlooking a beautiful beach after having all manner of amazing experiences, I still get jealous of everyone who’s experiencing a weekend in London.

The trip from hell

The trip that about killed me. :o))

Today was the day to go to Tayrona Park. We (5 of us) took a private bus out of Cartagena and headed to the park 4 hours away in the north of Colombia. Tayrona is a park that has some very pretty beaches and some campgrounds where you can rent hammocks and sleep very closely to complete strangers.

Now, I had to bring my big suitcase/backpack with me because I did not want to go all the way to Cartagena to get it. So, we thought that ...

A weekend with Wake...

... Wake Forest students for the night and get to hear what their lives are like in Salamanca. 4 of my sorority sisters are actually on the program so it was nice to catch up with them and hear how their semesters are going. It was interesting to note both the similarities and differences I discovered between my experience in Madrid and the experiences of those in Salamanca. Every Wake Forest student in Salamanca is required to do a homestay just like I am doing ...

It's cold :(

It is (apparently unseasonably) cool right now. It actually rained, and stormed, today. It was definitely a change from the usually sweltering norm.

In any case, it has alerted me to the fact that I way underpacked warm clothes. It's warmer here than Wisconsin, but it gets down to 10 in December, and it's 40 and under through November.

We spent most of the day in Salamanca. It was a lot of fun, but extremely hot and tiring. We have similar trips the next two weekends to Burgos and Valencia.

Sunday is the last day of the festivals. I'm ready for them to be over. It has been two straight weeks of crowds, loud music and street vendors. It's time for a break. I want to see what the city is like, normally.

Salamanca Homestay, And Side Trips!

... time in Salamanca, we took quite a few side trips to places including Ávila, Segovia, El Escorial, and Valley of the Fallen.

Ávila is a small walled city situated southeast of Salamanca. We weren't able to see a lot of the town, but this is where I attended a bullfight. I do not regret attending the bullfight because bullfighting is such a huge part of Spain's culture, but it is unlikely that I will attend another. It was neat to see the matadors' intricate ...
