Bolivia - La Paz

La Paz is a pretty cool city. Driving into it, I was looking out the window of the bus and seeing all these kids I had read about. Basically, they are from poor backgrounds so make their money by shining shoes but they-re kind of embarrassed about it so they wear ski masks or balaclavas so they-re not recognised. They look sooooo intimidating but they-re actually quite harmless. All they wanna do is shine shoes and earn a quick buck. Still a bit weird though when you-re wearing flip flops and...

Bolivia..copacabana, La Paz and Potosi

I travelled from Puno into Bolivia....via 2 buses and 1 boat, we went through Copacabana which is the town on Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian side - quite small but prettier than puno. I met some people on the bus/boat trip and we all went to the same hostel in La Paz, which was one of the best hostels ive stayed in, so much fun! La Paz was a really interesting city, we went on a walk round market, witches market cathedral etc. We also attempted to get into the San Pedro prison (bit random but ...

La Paz

Its a nice 4 hour drive from Copacabana to La Paz. The first half of the trip you circuit lake Titicaca until you come to the strait of Tiquina that separates lake Titicaca from lake Huiñaimarca. Here you have to get off the bus and catch a ferry across the to the other side while the bus crosses the strait on a barge. After Tiquina you rise up on to what appears to be a big plateau surrounded by distant mountains. When you get to La Paz a wide crack appears in the plateau and La Paz is locat...

Extreme Downhill from La Paz to Coroico

It was time to face the "World´s Most Dangerous Road" today. We went to the office of Xtreme Downhill at about 6:45 a.m this morning and met our bike guid, Luis and the rest of our Xtreme team. It was a group of 6 people including the two of us. We took off out of La Paz in a van (not down by the rio) and headed towards the top of one of La Paz´s stunning mountains. It took about a little over an hour to get to the top. We ate breakfast before taking off on our mountain biking experience. As ...

Tear Gassed in La Paz

After the beautiful city of Sucre we arrived in La Paz - a city that according to all the guide books you either love or hate. In the blog so far I have tried to be positive about all the places that we have travelled to - sometimes I have left one or two grey area out and tried to keep with the nice bits. It is really, really tough to do that with La Paz. It now has the distinction of being the only place on the planet where we have been tear gassed whilst trying to buy a stamp - may be thin...

Isla del Sol: Bolivia's Sacred Waterfront

May 23-26, 2009: Copacabana and Isla del Sol, Lago Titicaca and La Paz, Bolivia

Titicaca, El Lago Sagrado
After nearly two months away from any reasonable-sized body of water, it was time for us to visit Lago Titicaca. Titicaca is a mammoth lake covering 8,600sq km (5,300sq mi) at an altitude of 3,810m (12,500ft). It is one of the highest lakes in the world and straddles the border between Peru and Bolivia. The altitude, border straddle and size of the great lake constantly reminded...

Life on the inside

Ive become a little behind in the blogging of my epic adventures in Bolivia I'm afraid so all you fans out there I'm sorry if Ive disappointed you! ;) What a lot to do see and experience in Bolivia. I feel I have so much to say, so many experiences to remember and many amazing people Ive met over the last few weeks. There's just too much going on! But to come back to where I was a week or two ago and go form there is a good place to start. There are a few pictures of Copacabana, a small borde...
