Life with the Locals

... fun of you, "Joke only!" I loved using that phrase.

Bisayan Language

They would love it when we attempted to speak Bisayan. It's a fun language, with some rising and falling intonations, and our teacher, Raine (one of the staff members), would always encourage us to be more emotional when we spoke it. Not to brag or anything, but every time we had a Bisayan class (it was only once a week, so I only had 3 in total), I always got complimented for being ...

The City of Golden Friendship

... practically the entire family (mom, dad, some kids, brothers) because they all came in the van. With the unexpected addition of my huge bags and myself, we really had to cram that thing. One of her brothers had to sit in the back with all the luggage. I started apologizing to him about that, and they were like, "don't worry, Filipino style". Still got a lot of walls built this week! The houses will soon be homes!

They wrote a song called Bangon Cagayan after the Typhoon for victims and survivors and now it is played by the garbage trucks as they go through the city. Afterwards a band called Burnin Bush Reggae played and we danced and danced and danced. It rained but it didn't stop us! Honestly had a ton of fun.

A Proper Entry

... Tagalog. Awesome how many of them know 3 or 4 languages! Another culture confusion happened when getting my suitcase. When they making a palm facing me hand signal, I thought it meant stop. The wiggling fingers on top meant to come follow me. Confusing! The local workers have been awesome to get to know. Patient and helpful when volunteering, and slowly I am picking up Binisaya.

Overall enjoying my trip which is coming to a close!
