Cairo - Ignorance (And Photos Florence to Venice)

I am back in Cairo, drained, angry, dehydrated, hungry, and in as a general sweeping statement about my demeanour, ******. The hostel owner is somewhat abrupt at our complaints, but 'offers' us one free night's accommodation in return. It is a token gesture as that costs him nothing, and he has made a packet off us from the desert trip. Just another 'friend' in Egypt who is out to strip you of your cash. He is actually a little disturbing - he seems like the kind of guy who could turn very na...

Kickin it in Cairo and Pharonic Fatigue

We arrive in Cairo at 2:45 am and our trip begins. After sleeping for a few hours we meet up with our UW friend (and past travel buddy of mine) Corrie Stranjord and some of her friends at the King Tut hostel in Cairo. Corrie and friends had just finished a 2 week program of cultural interaction between UW and American University in Cairo. Because of this, we were able to hang out and make friends with all of their Egyptian friends. We were so lucky to be able to meet these Egyptians as they w...

Elvis Has Left The Country

Like a new born babe greedily suckles her mother's breast, Fertile Egypt feeds on the Nile, and the desert claims the rest, The Pyramids, King Tut, antiquities of old; Majestic Cairo surrounded by sands of gold; The kings, royal wives, and concubines great; Methinks, Pharaoh Kevin was born too late. Well, as many of you have so fervently requested, I was going to do this whole blog as an epic poem, but Tracy (to mock me?) asked the kids to write a limerick about a poem writing doofus, and I f...

Beyond the Pyramids

I arrived into Cairo two days ahead of my scheduled adventure tour. The first day I arrived in the afternoon and was picked up by a driver that my hotel sent for me. The first thing he wanted was my passport so that he could buy cigarettes at the duty free shop. I didn't know what to do so I went along with it (only $5 for a whole carton!) but I sure was not comfortable. So after about a 30 minute drive from hell to the King Tut hostel I paid the approx. $10 for my huge room(with four beds)!...

The Gang Makes the Tour Guide Cry

We arrived in Cairo in the wee hours of the morning. We had emailed our hostel and requested a pick up, but because it was after 1 am we figured we would have to make our own way there. So when we came out of customs and saw a man with a sign that said "King Tut Hostel: Brittany Velisek" we were very excited.

We made our way to the tiny car they had sent to pick us up. We managed to cram our four backpacks in the trunk and got in the car. As we did, a police officer and a parking atten...

Giza

We flew from Athens to Cairo on Thurs night arriving in the early hours of Friday morning. As you would expect Jimmy and myself are really organised and had great hotels booked everywhere we went on this trip. Yeah right, when we arrived in Cairo we were really lucky to meet 2 lovely Korean girls named Hye Yeon and Sia,and when the realised we didnt even have the name of a hotel they took us to their hostel.....The King Tut. If you ever go to Cairo avoid this place even if you have to sleep r...

I'm actually on the African Continent!!?!?!

Well! Hi everyone! :) I actually made it!!! It's crazy here. Well, not crazy in a bad way, just crazy in the sense that I can't believe I'm her! It's pretty freakin hot and we're wearing long sleeved shirts (very traditional Islamic city), the traffic is NUTS, it's very reminiscent of Malaysia or Vietnam in the way the city looks and the cars honk their horns every five seconds :) I took some video and quite a few pictures already and I hope to get them online soon. Our flight was looooooong....

18 hours in North Africa

Flying over Burma, India, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Wadi Rumm and the Nefud Desert, Sinai and Aqaba... reaching Cairo at 8:30 am after 10 hours in the air. We fly over the Nile before landing...below, the city spans only alongside the great river, completely surrounded by desert on all side. Soldiers with Uzis stand throughout the disconnected airport grounds. We exit the plane and descend onto the tarmac....it is still early and the sun has yet to arrive in full force. The air is frigi...

WHEW we made it

Hey everybody well here we are in Cairo.  The journey here was very very very long.........we arrived at about 2:00 am last night to an airport FULL of people trying to scam us.  (ie people saying "come to my office to book hotel" and when we would ask where their office was, they said outside.....outside meaning their CAR).  It was then that we realized it wasn't the smartest idea to come to Egypt at 2 in the morning without having any place to stay and no idea how to use the phones.  haha :...

Egypt 3

... had to lean against it with mit back while my feet were braced against the side of the deck. She sailed well though and went to windward no problem and having other feluccas on the same course we soon had a race. We won of course and our captain was shouting the news to his mates on the other boats. The next day it got seriously historical: Valley of the Kings (tombs), Valley of the Queens (more tombs) both on the west bank of the Nile, then ...
