Mahonda Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania, 255-747-415475
Finally getting off that 30 hour bus ride was a relief! We were happy to be in Tanzania, but more excited to get over to Zanzibar. We wandered a bit around Dar es Salaam (capital of Tanzania) and then caught an afternoon ferry for the island. Actually, getting the ticket for the ferry was quite an ordeal. We took a taxi to the ferry docks and had touts running along side our cab as we rolled through the drop-off point. These touts bring you to the "ticket stand" and you buy your ticket and ge...
Zanzibar Island, Tanzania daveandlisaMay 4, 2009 Aside from the time I've spend working at TAFCOM, visiting families and the Children's Center, I've also tried my best to explore East Africa's beauty. I have tried to get out as much as possible during my (short) 3 weeks here and have been fairly successful seeing all there is to see of this beautiful country. Before traveling here I was told many a horror story of the terrible infections, diseases and parasites I would surely contract upon setting food on African soil. Many of t...
Kendwa, Zanzibar, Tanzania ebowleySo left Moshi and Kili behind and started traveling with Mike who I hiked up Kili with. This was the first time that I was traveling with someone this trip and it was interesting travbeling with someone. Started talking to the guy that was sitting next to me about Tanzania and learned a lot about the country and the people. Tanzania tried its hand at Communism and fell flat on it's face while it's neighbour Kenya went the capitalist route and prospered. This is one of the reasons why there ar...
Dar es Salaam/ Zanzibar, Tanzania mike_brightAfter our awesome safari we spent a few days in kampala, during which time we were stopped once agai by the police, legit this time for going the wrong way downa 1 way st. By the time we paid 10.000 shilling we had miraculously become missionaries doing charity work and why bother the mzungas. Heather has the gift of the gab! there was some truth as we had just been to buy items for the Ugandan childrens camps. G & I flew to Arusha to begin another safari. Busy town lots of touts who are pers...
Kendwa, Zanzibar, Tanzania ole.dolvenRealizing that I had not given myself enough time to see Tanzania before I went to Kenya, I bagged the Malawi portion of the trip and decided to head straight to northern Tanzania. Why not Zanzibar? It is one of those exotic names that you grow up hearing and are always curious about, so why not just go? There was a direct flight, so I got there late and checked into a nice place. It was funny, when I was waiting for the flight I sat next to an older guy who worked for air tanzania (the airli...
Zanzibar, Tanzania triptalkAnd so, the end is near. I've just said my final goodbyes in the hospital and there are just a few hours left before we hop on the boat - again. Since the safari I've been fairly busy (in elective terms). I spent two days in a small village on the slopes of Mount Meru (Kilimanjaro's little-ish sister) which was a cultural tour aimed at giving an insight into how people live outside the cities. I was worried this might be a somewhat voyeuristic experience, which it mostly was, but I'm pleased ...
Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania ayack... Town early. We spent days walking around all areas of the city, including the local areas where all sorts of tasty fruit and biscuits etc could be found. We went on the obligatory spice tour where you go to a spice farm and check out how everything from pepper to tumeric to vanilla grows, and of course, taste it all. Then we headed to a slave cave where the arabs kept the slaves hidden while they built up the numbers to ship them off after the abolition of slaving - was very ...
Stone Town, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania thego... several metres so ideal for snorkelling. It's an amazing place - like swimming in a huge aquarium with fish (and starfish) of every size, shape and colour swimming among the spectacularly coloured coral. If you just float on the surface, some of the fish swim right up to your mask. We stayed at Bwejuu for seven days and on quite a few mornings enjoyed a swim before breakfast. One morning, a small jellyfish tried David's arm for breakfast! - resulting in pins ...
