This was because their plumes were the favoured fashion accessory for any respectable Edwardian lady, so much so that, for a while, Ostrich feathers by weight were worth more than gold! It isn't like that now of course, but you can still buy all manner of Ostrich related tat in the many gift shops in town. We settled for an empty Ostrich egg that has somehow managed to survive the flight home too!
