Kangaroo Island

Firstly, we have loaded some photos from Barossa Valley. The internet connection went on the blink while we were loading the photos, so had to re-load them later. Secondly, this blog entry is actually covering Kangaroo Island but is loaded in Adelaide, as we have not been able to find net access on KI. The odd thing is, that we have found, that as soon as we crossed state borders, from Vic to SA, the weather got loads better but the internet access is not as available as Vic. There is no wifi...

There's a wallaby joey behind the fridge...

I woke up early to pack up and move to the northern end of the island. As I was putting stuff in the car, Bruce asked if I had seen the joey. When I said no, he just kept moving, so I didn't think much of it until Lesley told me that there was a wallaby joey in the house that they had rescued. It had a crate to sleep in, but it preferred to stay behind the fridge! Very cool morning. I drove up to Stokes Bay and had lavender ice cream at Emu Bay lavender. I love this island. It's full of roll...

Kangaroo Island

Well- Filippo and I decided to take a 2 day trip/tour to the infamous Kangaroo Island south of Adelaide! Most tours were heaps expensive, but we found one that decent enough and turned out to be well worth the cost! So the trip in short- took a 3 hour bus to the port, a 1hour ferry across to the Island, stayed at a YHA hostel close to the ferry port. The first night we cooked ourselves some Italian pasta (what we always cook) and wine. I've found that Italians are much pickier about what they...

... of kangaroos that had obviously woken up after their afternoon naps so they were beautiful. We headed back to camp and had our picnic dinner while it was still light - cheese, biscuis, ham, salad, crisps, and grapes and wine :-). We had an unexpectedly close encounter with a kookaburra, as we had thrown a few iffy grapes into the bush and we realised that a kookaburra was coming down to fetch them - so that was really wonderful. We got so close and he was ...

... mainland. There was a large pulley system that was used to get the goods up the steep hill. From there we walked along a cliff trail down to Admirals Arch, home to fur seals of the region, belonging to both Australia and New Zeland? A natural underground Arch had been carved out over the centuries because of the amount of limestone in the ground. These seals were very similar to ours as they feed all the time like ours and you could really smell ...

Feeding Kangaroos and a Beach picnic

... are huge prehistoric looking birds - taller than me. I played with the red and grey kangaroos for a long time - some of them were as tall as me or taller! It was a great place. In the afternoon, Rachel brought us a picnic lunch in the old boat shed right on the beach. After lunch, we collected shells and rocks in the rock pools, Dad and I went snorkeling, and then we went for a walk to see the giant fig tree house and the mud flats. The fig tree house is in the middle of a ...

Journey to Kangaroo Island

... and the Northern Territory for the last few weeks. I was getting hungry, so I stopped and ate some lunch at a café there. Then I visited the Japanese Gardens and some water lilly ponds. They have a beautiful stand of bamboo in the Japanese area, but people have carved their initials in the bamboo bark and it looked quite unsightly. I don't know what possesses people to disfigure something so beautiful by carving their initials in it! Next, I ...

... of tourists whereas over the three days we seen one other tour group which meant we had the biggest national park in Australia all to ourselves. We seen some brilliant wildlife including birds, spiders, snakes and lizards and ate some bush tucker to go with our excellent meals. Back in Darwin we all met up after getting a well-earned shower and went on a bender that lasted two days. From one kind of wildlife to another is what Darwin is all about!! So down to Adelaide it was ...

Kangaroo Island -the rest of the trip

It has been sometime since I have written so I have some catching up to do!!! I think that I last wrote when I was on Kangaroo Island doing wwoofing after being there for a couple of days. I ended up staying there for 6 days and really enjoyed it. There were some days where I only worked 3 hours and others that I worked more than 8 but then got the day off the next day but on average it would have been around 4hrs each day. One day was spent cleaning the house which ...
