The real Antigua

If you ever feel like taking a 48 hour trip to a foreign country, you'd better call me, because I don't think you're going to find anyone else insane enough to fly to a foreign land, with absolutely no itinerary, on a few days notice! That's what I decided to do a few days ago. I arrived in Guatemala City (G-City) on Friday night after calculating my excursion plans several hours prior to boarding my flight out of Miami. I know I wanted to get right out of G-City and straight to Antigua. Now...

Guate, Guate, Guatemala!

Our trip to Guatemala involved getting on a Pullman bus in Leon and travelling for around 20 hours into the bottom tip of Honduras, into El Salvador and then into Guatemala. Three border crossings in 20 hours proved quite tiring and stressful for us but we eventually arrived in Guatemala City hot, sweaty, overtired and scared witless about being in one of Central America´s most notorious and dangerous cities.

The bus ride was ... interesting to say the least. We expected air con, comf...

Lets go fly a kite...

Sitting at the very back of a shuttle that is going to take about 8 hours is not fun, particularly when you are between two boys with your legs on top of a car tyre. This is what my shuttle journey was like back to Antigua from Honduras. By the time we reached our lunch stop I was feeling a little jaded and a lot claustrophobic after the boys had closed the windows whilst I had been sleeping. I couldnt wait to get out of the bus and practically jumped over Julian to get some fresh air down my...

1st night in Antigua

Well yesterday we arrived in Antigua at around 12pm, getting there was a defiantly an experience. We took our first chicken bus from the city to Antigua, a 40 min. drive that cost only roughly $1. Upon arriving in Antigua we decided to tour the city and find the most economical accommodations. After checking out 3 hostels we decided on "Jungle Party Hostel"..doesn't it just sound cool? This place has a real cool laid back atmosphere, full of international travelers who are all doing this same...

Hot Lava watch out!

Well today was an interesting morning, after waking up with a slight headache from the night before :) I decided to grab something to eat at the hostel. There's nothing like a big free breakfast to cure those late night fiestas. My free Desayuno(breakfast) consisted of a burger with a fried egg topped on it, french fries, & fruit. Henry's on the other hand consisted of a piece of bread and cereal...(He woke up late...lol). After finishing breakfast I decided to show one of our new dorm ma...

Climbing Pacaya

... that looked something like the surface of the moon. Nothing grew here; I saw no green shoots, no signs of life. The earth was black and barren, when you walked a small cloud of dust arose from your footprints. Looming above us was a smoking peak.

As we pressed on we reached some twisted rock formations, which we proceeded to walk over. The horse couldn’t go any further. Good thing I brought my boots. There was a ...

Sitting atop the 64m high, 1200-year-old Temple IV at Tikal, gazing over the canopy of trees and watching the sun sink low in the sky to the sound of unseen howler monkeys. Very special.

Running Hot

... the thermal conditions, the wind was whipping and all it takes was a sudden gust or a poorly placed step and you are a toasted human...No thanks.

My horse guide was a little disappointed that I did not hire the horse for the return journey, but I knew going down was much easier that going up. As it got dark, I discovered that my flashlight did not work. Fortunately a German, Elsa, shared her light. It is amazing that ...

15 tonnes of Jesus

... cross. Its mostly wood and fibreglass and weighs 15 tonnes. A group of 80 men dressed in purple robes carry it on their shoulders swapping every few blocks for another set of 80 men. They look like they are in pain as they strain to carry it, often holding their children at the same time. Following them is a marching band. It really is incredible the effort that is made to carry out this procession. As the procession takes so long ...

Marshmallow toasting on the Pacaya volcano lava

... family with us brought there 5 year old son on the climb which made me believe that maybe it was all a bit of an exaggeration. It might well have happened in the past but now with so much security there was really no risk apart from being hit from some molten lava. The boys from the village were also offering taxi rides up the mountain on horseback. The 5 year old did all the climb on his rather disheveled looking horse ...
