Up the Cruz (Shore Rd Brazilians)

Having finished our project at the school early, coupled with the unbelievably hot and humid weather we decided to hit the road a wee bit early and move to Santa Cruz. It was just the small trip of 12 hours overnight on the bus with the rickety wheels:-) We were supposed to fly down but the airport was closed because of the "humo", a thick pale of smoke that covers most of the lowlands at this time of year when the farmers burn the grass, instead of cutting it. I think this policy was first i...

Santa Cruz

We left Bonito on a bus at 6 in the morning and arrived into the border city of Corumba about lunch time. We had prebooked our tickets for the "Death Train" to Santa Cruz so we just had to cross the border and get to the station on the other side. We had the two Israeli guys from the hostel in tow, but I think they thought we were depending on them. So we get the bus to the border and myself and Steph with our usual immigration techniques plan on saying nothing - not that we really could if w...

Glad I´m not staying here long

Got into Santa Cruz this morning after a surprisingly decent sleep on the bus from La Paz, not helped by the Chuck Norris film in Spanish, or the fact that we dropped almost 3500ms and my ears kept popping and getting quite painful. Quick taxi ride to the hostel. Its a nice place and glad to be at a lower altitude for once. Its lovely and warm and the place I´m staying has a small swimming pool. Not that I´ve managed to use it though. Went out to watch the England game. Made a mess of the ti...

Sunny Santa Cruz

So it´s been a sunny few days in Santa Cruz, walking around the city and taking some Spanish classes, which were surprisingly good fun. Although the day of my ´big move´ to new accommodation dawned extremely rainy and I had to make the journey in the pouring rain. But at leastit wasn´t cold. Jodanga was a vast improvement on my last choices with a nice communal area, kitchen and dorm accommodation.Could definitely do with a few more bathrooms however! And with all my too-ing and fro-ing I some...

My First Few Days in Bolivia

... talking to me. After a long layover I transfered to a flight to Santa Cruz with a stop in La Paz. The weather was too windy around La Paz to land but we did get to circle around Lake Titicaka a bit which provided some absolutely stunning views. Anyway I landed in Santa Cruz and spent a really hectic night trying to find Bolivianos and a Hotel with space (I eventually found a cheap hotel).

Santa Cruz is not a very nice city. I write this now having experienced a few ...

Bolivia: Santa Cruz

We ended up staying in Santa Cruz longer than we had planned because we had to wait for our washing to be done before heading to the wildlife sanctuary. However as it happens I think it was a blessing in disguise! One of the guys we met earlier in our trip headed to the sancturary in advance and we received an email from him the ...

Bolivia - Quijarro, the Death Train and Santa Cruz

... are all ex-Hong Kong complete with cantonese livery. There are some fantasic European style cafe´s, including a place called Alexanders just off the main plaza, which serves the most amazing coffee and wraps, the decor is almost like being in a Costa or a Starbucks. The place has great fridge counters full of all sorts of delicous cakes and muffins. Considirng I haven´t had a good coffee for nearly three weeks I could have kissed the waiter. In fact ...

From the Inka trail to San Pedro jail.

... Pedro jail in La Paz. I agreed to be there at 12.30 and took some of the guys I met on the Inka trail and Steve along. I had heard about San Pedro when I was back in Chile as well as many other places since I've been in SA. The place used to be well known for visits until a book entitled Marching Powder was published exposing these visits and blatant drug taking within. (I bought a signed copy of this and am currently hooked). Anyway, I entered ...

"How Not to Get Robbed"

... banging into each other and looking around absent-mindedly until their superior shouted a couple more orders and they, just about, managed to stand up straight and look menacing (compared to say the cub scouts). Back on the bus and the uneven sandy road continued. We had to weave through some oddly placed barrels, and I suspected that this road was the reason for the 30 odd hour duration of the journey, but within two hours we returned to fairly smooth asphalt. (Things must have ...
