Cairns

We arrived in Cairns after a rubbish 7 hour flight. Having left Singapore at 10pm, we had a small stop over in Darwin so they could 'clean the plane', and arrived in Cairns at 8am Australian time. I immediately got in trouble with an Australian gentlemen for stroking the search dog (I was overtired and didn't realise that the dog was 'on duty')... not the nicest of welcomes to the country. After a short nap, me and the girls went off to the cinema and saw 'Last Chance Harvey' - what else shou...

Cairns

Ok thought i better do this or it would never get done only 3 months behind!!! Well from what i remember Cairns was really, really warm. Sun here is pretty intense. Funny cause just now in January Cairns is having really bad floods and is on disaster alert. Anyway we spent the time in Cairns chilling out, sunbathing and going to the esplanade. It's all quite different from Asia, the place we're staying at gives you free vouchers for a meal from a place called the Rhino bar. Good food but got ...

The arrival of Fuller!! Cairns

Well it;s been a while since i wrote on our progress but we've been really busy of late. Where to start... 13th Oct Fuller arrived in Carins and the heavens opened with an almighty downpour of rain lasting 3 or 4 hours. the shuttle picked him up and dropped him to the hostel, but unlike Kelly in Santiago all Paul wanted to do was go straight to bed, i suppose coming off a 30something hour flight would do that to a person. So we went for our free dinner in Rhinobar and had an early night. 14th...

Leatherback turtles and snotty teenagers

After a bit of a boring flight from Sydney, we arrived in Cairns and at our hostel later on in the evning. The hostel, though slightly a bit out of town, was fine - plus we got free meals to one of the local watering holes in town (though we found out later on it was the club 18 to 21 kind of place), though we never took advantage of this because of the latter factor of club 18 to 21 scene. We did have to move one night out of the hostel to 'Jimmy's on the Esplanade' - basically our worst so ...

Cruising on to Cairns!

I got to Cairns with minutes to spare! I had to drop off the camper by 3pm on the 18th and left myself aboot 10 mins to spare..phew! It worked oot though...quite lovely actually. What a great way to see the country..the best way really and no major debacles, just a few minor irritations which happens with any roadtrip. Yeehaw! So made my way to a hostel..no more of my own space (even if it was in a tiny campervan, it was still lovely), back to good 'ol dorm rooms. My friend, Andy, from Manche...

Christmas in Cairns

Merry Christmas again! I ventured back to Cairns on Christmas Eve...i was still having issues realizing the fact that it was indeed Christmas. It was just too bloody hot. I woke up Christmas morning and had a lovely, quiet, relaxing few hours just sitting/swimming in the blue lagoon. The lovely swimming pool across the street from the hostel, right on the boardwalk, beside the ocean. There were famlies in the park cooking their xmas dinners on the provided bbqs...aussies typically have a bbq ...

We Land in Oz!

... decided to move down the coast relatively quickly. We'll come back hopefully at some stage in the future and explore the areas north of Cairns as they are beautiful as we had always intended on spending the majority of our time on the West Coast of Australia on this trip....Also when we come back we'll hopefully be gainfully employed and can skip having to bum around with the 18 year olds....bahh humbug.

The Great Barrier Reef - 1 Natural Wonder down

... a crew member laughing and applauding our brave but inopportune effort. He had in fact been an instructor and there were some rescue dive students out there performing a search pattern for their mock rescue training. Both birnie and I, as well as the crew got some good laughs over the incident and we were quickly nicknamed Chris Cross - saviors of the deep. Even though we lobbied hard to get our rescue certification for our heroic efforts, the dive crew on the ...

Fraser Island and the Whitsundays

... and out through the back of the driver cabin. Crazy! The driver was bleeding from glass wounds to his face. Thankfully we had a doc (who would that be?) and paramedic on board. We washed and bandaged him after superficial exploration didn't herald any obvious remaining glass splinters and recommended A&E if any glass suspected. We then helped the silly fools to move their load as they watched us work while drinking a nice cool beer themselves. Idiots!

Before embarking on ...
