Napier is known as New Zealand's Art Deco centre - all the buidings are in a classic Art Deco style, very 1920's. This is because around 1934 there was a very large and devastating earthquake which completely destroyed the town and claimed quite a few lives. The people of Napier decided to rebuild the town in the same style and this meant it became very Art Deco. Thurs 3rd July Sam: We booked ourselves into a converted jail last night and they've managed to keep up with the original decor, which is great. They've even kept one of the cells in it's original form with some amazing graffitti done by one of the last prisoners to stay at the prison, which closed in 1999. When we arrived in Christchurch it was raining! A bit of a climate change from Fiji to say the least! We arrived pretty late on. We had to catch a bus into the city centre. Then change onto another one to get to our accommodation, which we narrowly missed by 5mins, meaning we had an hr to wait with all our bags in the centre of Christchurch, on a Saturday night! We made it! Reporting in from Christchurch, here we are. The 777 experience on Air New Zealand was interesting. Sat in business premier, which has lie-flat capable, "pod" seating. Every seat is kind of its own little bubble with TV and table and ottoman/guest seat. But I was so far removed from Travis (let alone the 'rents).
