So here we are in New Zealand, Land of the Bloody Long and Fairly Permanent Cloud, home to more camper vans than people per square mile. Famed for sheep, rugby and, er, being a bit like Australia but not as good. Or so Australians would have you think anyway. New Zealand is actually one of the most beautiful countries on earth, with some stunning scenery, really friendly people, and amusing accents. Yes is "Yisss!" and you can get some corking "fush and chups" for supper; it´s unfectious! I s...
Christchurch, New Zealand andyandemNapier is known as New Zealand's Art Deco centre - all the buidings are in a classic Art Deco style, very 1920's. This is because around 1934 there was a very large and devastating earthquake which completely destroyed the town and claimed quite a few lives. The people of Napier decided to rebuild the town in the same style and this meant it became very Art Deco. So we had a little wander around and marvelled at the pretty buildings, had a wander alond the beach and then retired to our prison...
Napier, New Zealand caz_sykesWe arrived in Christchurch after another decent distance of a drive. We looked up our ever reliable BBH book to suss out the options for a place to stay. Unfortunately due to our less than superb organisational skills the top 3 choices were booked out! Ah well, book us Danno because we are off to jail... The Jailhouse hostel that is, and yes, like cats once again we land on our feet as this hostel was definitely original and a cool place to stay. The story behind the hostel is that it was a j...
Christchurch, New Zealand cccdThurs 3rd July Sam: We booked ourselves into a converted jail last night and they've managed to keep up with the original decor, which is great. They've even kept one of the cells in it's original form with some amazing graffitti done by one of the last prisoners to stay at the prison, which closed in 1999. We spent today exploring Christchurch on a local tram and visiting Christchurch cathederal. We also managed to plan a bit more of NZ and realised how little time we have and how much we're...
When we arrived in Christchurch it was raining! A bit of a climate change from Fiji to say the least! We arrived pretty late on. We had to catch a bus into the city centre. Then change onto another one to get to our accommodation, which we narrowly missed by 5mins, meaning we had an hr to wait with all our bags in the centre of Christchurch, on a Saturday night! Not much fun! When we landed up at the 'Jailhouse' hostel we were pleasently suprised! It was actually a real converted Jailhouse! O...
Christchurch, New Zealand danlauranewbyWe made it! Reporting in from Christchurch, here we are. The 777 experience on Air New Zealand was interesting. Sat in business premier, which has lie-flat capable, "pod" seating. Every seat is kind of its own little bubble with TV and table and ottoman/guest seat. But I was so far removed from Travis (let alone the 'rents). We were watching the same movie, but had to yell over at each other (quietly, of course) to laugh at it. (Knocked Up, BTW. Travis thought it was hilarious. I thought it w...
