Hello NZ! Te Wai Pounamu
Three hours from Melbourne and we were in Christchurch, but we could have been in Canterbury or Oxford (!) if it wasn't for the short flight from Australia! The sun was shining brightly for us for our new adventure in NZ, we hopped of the airport bus in the centre of town by the Cathedral heading for the Jailhouse! The Jailhouse is an ex prison …
The land of the long white cloud
So here we are in New Zealand, Land of the Bloody Long and Fairly Permanent Cloud, home to more camper vans than people per square mile. Famed for sheep, rugby and, er, being a bit like Australia but not as good. Or so Australians would have you think anyway. New Zealand is actually one of the most beautiful countries on earth, with some stunning …
Geisterstadt
Getting this NZ show on the road!
We had got a bargain on the flight from Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia but between the already late night flight being delayed and the lack of leg room (even I felt cramped and I'm only 5’4’’!) we were fairly wrecked disembarking at Christchurch. But we were excited to have arrived there was no denying that! Tom hadn’t printed …
Jailtime
Thank you all for all your comments and emails. We love reading them and look forward to it! We may not be able to respond to them all but we do read them all with smiles!
We awoke bright and early on Friday anticipating travelling to the airport, which we did, but was slightly delayed due to the fact the hostel staff wasn't there yet and …

Great facilities, convenient, very near to train station, and most importantly priceless experience to have spent the night in a real jailhouse! Highly recommended!!! Would come back again!

amazing character, good kitchen, bit of a walk from town though (20-30minutes), could provide a mini-bus shuttle

Fantastic hostel in a great hertiage building. Good location and excellent facilities.

Would recommend - the rooms are cosy, beds very comfortable (made up to perfection). Found the service to be closer to that in a hotel than a hostel, a tad impersonal. Communal spaces aren't the best as the tv lounge is very open and can get noisy with tv on and people sitting at tables next to it.

Really atmospheric, very clean. A bit far from town but otherwise perfect.

Loved the hostel...too bad there wasn't a whole lot going on in the area, but we were only passing through really so shouldn't really pass judgement!

One of the best places we've stayed, great character, really nice, clean, quiet rooms, stay here!

Certainly a unique place to stay and the faciliteis are top drawer. Only downside is that it can be a bit noisy. Being a former prison the halls echo especially when giggling girls are chatting outside their rooms.

What a cool experience! Simple but effective accommodation in the Historic Jail. The rooms and kitchen are fairly small but there are lots of good communal spaces. Free pool, mini cinema, book swap and tourist info and bookings. A novelty experience staying in the old cells with the original cell doors and the black and white striped theme.

By far the most clean and tidy hostel we have stayed at, a realy experience to stay at a former jail and the rooms are basic to give you that feel
Really helpful staff and not far into town with a bus stop outside
