... really prisoners. They were mistreated, forced to work hard labor, and living conditions were inhumane. Still, it was not an extermination camp. However, most Jews who went through Terezin were transported to extermination camps from there, and very few who ever lived in Terezin survived to see the end of the war.

... we caught the tram to our hostel which was another Plus hostel but quite nice, minus the lack of airconditioning which almost killed all of us because it was so damn hot in our room. Walking into the first synagogue, the Pinkas, all the walls are white with writing on them from the floor to the part where it curves up into Gothic arches. This extends through the entire synagogue. The writing is divided into sections according to the town or area in Bohemia from where the people came. Family names followed by individuals. All who perished under Nazi rule.
