Cairns, Queensland - 28th-30th October, 2008: And so we hit Cairns, with some mixed feelings. It was the end of the road, at least for the driving part of the trip, and the sign that it was time to think about going home. We hadn't planned to do anything in Cairns, it was simply the last town in which we could drop the Van off, back to it's real owners. Beforehand, we spent hours cleaning it inside and out, which was great fun - we spent $8 on a Jet Wash, $6 of which was spent trying to get e...

Cairns, Australia eddandalice24 Nov 03 Time to leave Cairns with the plan to travel south on the greyhound bus, arriving in Sydney in time for Christmas. First stop just two hours down the coast to Mission Beach and to the Beach Shack hostel www.missionbeachshack.com, a very different hostel to those I'd been used to as it was basically a huge house which had been converted in to a hostel. Got chatting to Chris & Katie, a couple from Loughborough and got beat numerous times at pool by Chris. I won't be playing him fo...
Queensland, Australia insleyGot to my hostel and checked in. Didn't really think much of it, so went around town in the evening looking for another. Found a place called Global Palace, it is really nice and only $22 a night. Got massive TV, pool table etc. Met Dave in my room at Inn the Tropics, he has just done his first day at the same diving place i am going to be going. First day of diving was ok, had a few hours of theory, then got in the pool. Learnt how to kit ourselves up etc. Only had one problem when we went i...

So the lack of work and the approaching Southern Winter drove us to seek greener pastures and warmer climates, a short flight to Cairns in the North of the East Coast delivered the warmth we were looking for, but just a bit too humid for us, Robbie could barely leave the well air conditioned hostel before needing to change his t-shirt! We spent a couple of days exploring Cairns, a backpackers town with plenty of pubs and the Great Barrier Reef.
A day cruising the Great Barrier Ree...

So ive just spent the last week in Cairns which is about 60 KM's or so south from Port Douglas. Had a good week and managed to get alot of stuff done really so been a busy bee!
Monday morning we arrived into Cairns city and got to our Hostel called 'NJoy!' Hostel seems a pretty friendly place but smaller than Dougies in Port Douglas and plus it has no bar which sucks but the plus side is that its a BYOB hostel (bring your own beer) so can work out cheaper. Me and Jamie m...
Hey All
Well i've had a jam packed week so far and done things i never would have even dreamed of! On Monday we departed Cairns and headed south to the small town of Mission Beach. This pretty much consisted of literally a handful of roads, a few shops and a few hostels. We stayed at the Mission Beach retreat which was 100 metres from the beach itself which was nice. The hostel was owned by an elderly couple Ron and Anne. They were both very nice ut Ron was a bit strict and made sure t...

... of some of the fish we were swimming with were huge - a fantastic experience. Jim dived down and swam alongside a huge Cod type fish which was as large as a cow...no kidding! He's still going on about its eyes...he reckons they were as big as oranges! The Barrier Reef was really expensive but well worth the experience. We decided against heading into the rainforests as we'll be in the Amazon later this year and ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia sheerin09... up being an instructor, applauded Birnie under water and emptied his BC as he descended back to the ocean floor. Birnie surfaced and we then realized that we had been part of a rescue diving training qualification without even having paid for the course!! We laughed a little bit at the surface, and were actually a little bit proud that we were cognisant enough to attempt to rescue a diver in despair. None the less, we swam back to the dive deck and were met by ...
