... starkly contrasting to anything else in the area (ie: the Andes) this is why they are such a sight to see: they are unique in their appearance and they do not belong to the Andes Range. Formed 12 million years ago by an earthquake I guess they would have seen many a Mylodon roaming around!

A relaxing trip through the National Park viewing more Icebergs (no where near as impressive as the ones ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile theblakes... to be specific - the wooden hut, offering us a mattress to rest on for the night, room to dry our stuff and a roaring fire.. happy days. Day 3 (Dickson to Los Perros): Despite the traumatic 2nd day we were now too far gone to turn back, besides with our tent dry, wounds bandaged and words of optimism of passersby our confidence grew (once again).. The 9km (4 hour) day was mainly through dense forest (hobbit land), captivating to be in for the first couple hours. We ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile kc2009I had read a lot about the boat trip before I came to Chile and it had very mixed reviews. I even managed to find some footage of it on utube so I knew what I was letting myself in for. The Navimag ships were cargo ships which cottoned on to the fact they could make money out of tourist who wanted to see the coastline by boat. So the facilities are by no means glamourous, although personally it was better than I expected. I slept in a big dorm of bunk beds sectioned into groups of 4 with ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile coleauxv... is ferocious here but disappointd I didn´t get to see the Orcas. But at least I tried - don´t have the money to rent out the car for another day even though I know the weather prob will be cracking. Instead its onwards and upwards to Buenos Aires. Supposed to be a crazy party town and one of only two cities I have been looking forwad to really seeing. Looking forward to letting my hair down for a few nights and checking out a different type of Argentinian wildlife.
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile ray_harrington... it was going to be a long next day. We headed off at a reasonable time the next day to Campamento Chileno which is underneath the Torres. The walk took us back down the valley then along a lake side past one of the hostels and over the rolling lake side. After several hours it leveled out and the walking became easier. We didn´t get much help from the misleading signs which have the most random times for each distance. As we got round to the right valley it ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile feeandpete... most because the wind at the top is so powerful most people leave after 15 minutes cause its so cold. So we told the ranger who called the surrounding camp sites, maybe he had gotten lost, then took three of our group up to the summit looking for him. The rest of us waited as base camp asking others if they had seen a guy with bright red hair and red beard. No one had noticed him. A little less than an hour after the ranger went up, he came running down ...
Puerto Natales, Chile linseypaddock... hut) to see if we could get a close view of the Torres. As we continued up the narrow slippery trail, we were passed by what looked like the ranger crew ready to start working on the bridge,... a guacho on a horse with three horses following him with some sort of equipment on their backs. No 4X4 here J After a couple of hours we go to Refugio Chileno and got in to warm up. It was a wooden building, with a a kitchen some small rooms to sleep in, and ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile mrewkowski... br>On the way we saw some groups of llama type creatures, but I've now heard so many conflicting names for them that I will refer to them only as "llama type creatures" from here on in! ;)

There was just enough time for one last look back at the towers over a lake and then we ...
Puerto Natales, Chile al_fey... try and work out where the hell we were and how we were going to get to the hostel.

A few people had recommended the Erratic Rock hostel, which is apparently a bit of an authority on trekking Torres del Paine, but unfortunately they were full, so we were in their sister hostel a few blocks away.

This was imaganitively named "Erratic Rock 2", which sounded more like a Hollywood blockbuster than a hostel.

We had to go to the ...
