Hvar-ing the best time in paradise!!

Welcome one and all to paradise!! Croatia just keeps on getting better and better, although it's hard to believe as it has to be the most welcoming, sunniest and just damn right gorgeous, at every location......er except Zagreb!! We were greeted from the ferry port by our lovely landlady who escorted us to our apartment. Much to our delight she upgraded us for free to a four person apartment with a balcony with the views of the fortress and bell tower - amazing!! The apartment was just like a...

Split - quiet but good weather

... so a lot of people in Split would have gone back to their villages or home town for the weekend.
Also explains why the graves in Zagreb looked so good the day too.
Went to Gaga which the barman at the first bar said if any place would be busy, that place would be and it was dead.

Saturday walked around the market, got Burek for breakfast and then up a bunch of stairs to get a good look over Split.

What we thought would be a vacation...

... English, all at once, telling us either “1 minute walking” or “city center” or “50 meter to beach” or “nice room” or “come see room” in broken English. We finally settled on the guy who spoke the most English and promised us the lowest price. Of course, when he took us to his apartment so we could check it out, he had “forgotten” his low price at the dock and Andre had to ...

... something quiet. This spot is exactly what we were hoping for! There are only about fifty people at the campsite, which means that it is private without us being the only ones at the campsite, which seems to have been the trend lately! We bargained with the lady at the desk and paid for the cheapest spot but were able to park in the most expensive with the best views…they are unbelievable. Sailboats are going past now and we ...

Diocletian's Palace, circa 300AD

... Serbia, Kosovo, and Macedonia became part of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, which was ruled from Constantinople. Around 615 AD, Slavic tribes migrated to Dalmatia and attacked Salona, whose inhabitants fled to Split and sought safety in the high walls of the palace. From the 12th to 19th centuries, the region was fought over by successive waves of Turks, Venetians, French, and Austrians among others. Modern Croatia was formed in 1991.

We're in the islands man!

... we made it to the bay, we were sheltered from the wind. It was perfect. Both Ian and I were adventurous (or crazy) enough to venture into the Adriatic Sea for a swim... holy moly it was cold but so worth it. The water was so crystal clear that I was half expecting the water to be chlorinated rather than salt water. We got out and sat on our deck chairs for another hour or so drying out before we decided to ...

Oh yeah I forgot I had a Travelpod!

... we wandered around the island, occasionally jumping in for a swim in the freezing cold water (generally these 'swims' lasted 3.5 seconds) and eating all the fresh seafood we could get our hands on....and also the island's best chocolate souffle. My last night was spent up on top of the hill, at the old fortess overlooking the whole island, before heading back to London (where the weather is now in the mid ...

The Island of Hvar

... to get the meaning across (even though I had some on - for non-Aussies you will have to use your imagination - budgies are little birds called budgerigars and budgie smugglers are men's swimming costume such as Speedo's), and then she fluffed it when she tried to tell Jim because he couldn't understand her accent. Our first stop was the so-called Green Cave and those who want to are invited to have a swim, so we do. The water is beautiful and ...

Hvar

... lost (this time not on purpose) in the windy streets and steps on my way up to the castle. Not complaining though, not a bad place to be lost! The castle was a walled fortress complete with canyons and a pirates-of-the-Caribbean looking prison. Ran into a few others there and stopped to have a pint sitting on the ledge of the castle wall overlooking the town and the ...

Port Town of Split

... the night we arrived was a big celebration and it took us 20 minutes to walk through the crowd along the Riva. Our first full day here was spent "running errands". We did our laundry in Croatia's ONLY self-service laundrette facility (run by an Aussie!). We have decided from our own experiences of trying to find a self-service laundry that this would be quite the successful business venture! There is ...
