Exploring the Lungs of the Earth

... Perus main coca growing region which is still controlled by the Shinging Path, we have opted to fly out of Iquitos to Lima tommorow. We are headed to an Eco Meditation Ashram an hour north of Lima to clear our heads after all of this jungle madness ( http://ecovolunteer.blogspot.com/2007/1 2/peru-eco-truly-park.html ), and then heading down the coast, and east to Cuzco. Hoping to make it there by the end of the month. Love to Cali
Iquitos, Peru: tourist destination in the jungle

... is a large labyrinth of streets and alleys and tourists are often approached by the locals, who try to sell them goods and services. A guide can be a handy buffer and also knows what the going rates and prices are. He can also explain what the various foods and products are that are on sale here.

For example; one particularly popular local drink is called masato, or jungle beer. It is not bad at all when you try it, but you should know how it is made: The ...

"salida hoy, sin falta"

... faster. This was a bit of a gamble because the lesser reputable boats don’t necessarily always tell you the truth about things like if they are going to leave on time. But their sign said 5pm sin falta (without fail). This proved to a big error however, because by 7pm we still hadn’t left and were then told we wouldn’t leave until tomorrow at 5pm. And that departure time was just as suspect. We only had 12 days left to see Macchu Picchu before Andy had to fly ...

fishing for hawks

... Andy was wearing a bright red shirt, but I am not sure if monkeys actually throw things at targets. I guess I wouldn’t put it past them though either. We watched them for a few more minutes as they jumped out of sight and we continued on. Eric and I fell back and Andy and Falcon walked ahead. After a few more minutes hiking behind I noticed a bright orange/brown striped snake on the forest floor right where Andy and Falcon had just walked past - they must have ...

Eric the spearfisher

... have several subspecies with black being the most aggressive. Our little guy looked more scared than anything and probably just felt like a fish out of water. Andy passed him to Eric and we took a couple more photos as the caiman just sat motionless. Eventually the caiman got his wits together, made a quick sudden head/tail thrust and Eric jumped and dropped him into the water. They little caiman probably went to sleep the next day with nightmares of people and after ...

Humble in the jungle

... it because its really useful for them too. It was just so odd to walk through the jungle and find a concrete path lying there.

There's a well known market in Iquitos in an area known as Belén, where there is also a floating city. Belén is pretty low down on the river shore and with the rising and falling water line every year (the river rises and falls about 7 metes every year between wet and dry season), people have taken to living in houses on rafts on the ...

Dawn on the Amazon

... everyone here does. We stopped at several villages along the way as well. The first one we visited was Llanchama where a very sweet woman named Maria showed us around. She showed us an amazing amount of edible and medicinal plants and we tried a variety of native fruits - all yummy to my taste buds. We also went to her chakra which is the area where she grows her crops. She had yucca, banana, chickens ...

Rumble in the Jungle

... we waited till dark and jumped in the canoe with our torches and set off somewhat nervous on my part as it was very creepy. We headed towards an area which is the dry season is a lake and now just part of the high water level in the jungle, along the way Falcon`s eye to spot all the noctural creatures amazed us and he pointed out all the animals that he could spot, the noise was also very different at night, the frogs were incredibly loud and even jumped on the canoe mainly ...

Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve: it ain't Disneyland!

... an eco-friendly way.
We visited several other communities, including Llanchama, Mishana and San Antonio. We met the locals, who gave us tours of their villages and the nearby jungle, and we learned a lot about medicinal plants, delicious fruits, unusual trees and local farming. We also learned that rubber boots would have been a useful thing to bring, and that ant bites can be a lot worse than mosquito bites.

San Antonio, home of the last ...
