Back to the Modern World

Thanks to the multitude of transportation delays I endured in Bolivia, and a little too much dawdling in Peru and Ecuador, I didn't have nearly as much time in Colombia as I'd hoped. No time for Cartagena or Medellin. Instead I just spent four days in Bogota, which wasn't so bad as it was easily my favorite big city of the trip. Why? By far the most diverse slate of cultural offerings, even though I took advantage of almost none of them. Good food at rock-bottom prices: pizza and soda for a d...

Bogota - full of surprises!

... undertake a bus change during our trip to Villa de Leyva and in my rush to get off the bus to use the facilities (yes, it is a regular occurrence for me during these bus rides) I left my beloved Panama hat on the luggage rack above the seats. By the time I realised I had left it behind we were already on another bus well on our way. It was very upsetting for me, I think I had the hat for nearly a month and we both had some great times together. Eugene received ...

Huhu!

Goodbye Southern Cross, Hello Big Dipper

... meal again.

We grabbed our bags from the hostel (I was packed in my small luggage for the rest of my time in Colombia and happy to leave Big Bertha behind in Bogota) and hopped on a collectivo to reach the bus stand. The collectivos (or micros/minibuses) in Bogota are hysterical space-age looking vans that resemble a cross between the Car Designed by Homer and Shaggy's van in Scooby Doo. It was also only C$1,200 (USD0.60) for the 10km ...

Bogota Begins

... yodel. No sweat. After another 30 minutes, we decided to make a run for it...literally...and sprint across the square to a nearby tavern where we enjoy some spiced wine before flagging down a few taxis back to La Zona Rosa. We take a quick nap and arrange for a car that can take us to the famous Andre Carne De Res, a popular restaurant/party extravaganza 30 minutes outside the city. Pulling up to the establishment, which is actually in the middle of nowhere, I quickly ...

Bogota - Free Certify International Yellow Fever V

... the savannah, looks like for the last 2 years the city changed in a very good way. On a Sunday like today, many streets in Bogota are closed for the "Ciclovia" this means that the people have space to exercise using bicycles, roller skates, jogging, and walking without cars or buses on the road. Everyday at 6:00 AM and at 6:00 PM all the radio stations stop working and play the National Anthem. Carl is noticing some interesting laws and traditions, for example all motorcyclists must ...

New Years in Bogota

... a quick change we went out to the Parque de la Independencia for a concert (which was televised) and countdown to 2009. We left everthing including the camera in the hotel. But it was quite a civilised affair with a strong police presence and families with children in attendance. After several bands including Los Gigantes and Adriana Bottina (sorry, no Shakira!) fireworks were shot off the Colpatria Tower (over 30 stories) for 10 mins! It was amazing! Happy New Year 2009!

Last week in Bogota

... Andres Clamaro and the fact that Pilar has lost her voice makes me think she had a good time. To be less stressed about pick pocketing, we did not take bags or cameras. I regret it because we were so well positioned and the vibes were very good so photos would have been fantastic. Nevermind and for those interested in discovering Juanes, here is a link with (bad) images of the concert ...
