The Last Supper

Five hundred years ago, Leonardo da Vinci stretched out on makeshift scaffolding in the dining hall of the convent Santa Maria della Grazie, and stared at the same fresco plaster for four years, 1494-1498. Often, his brushes flew across the irregular surface in the cool shade under the high ceiling of the room. Vibrant reds, lush greens, tranquil blues, and pure whites danced with each other as the faces of the Disciples slowly woke from beneath the plaster and emerged to see the world and gr...

Matt Does Lake Como: Volume I

For anyone who has watched Star Wars II, do you remember the images from Amidala's home world Nabu (or however you spell those words) with the terraced gardens and the lake views? Well, those shots were filmed in Italy, on Lake Como, and today, I visited one of the places where some of those shots were taken. It all began at the Varenna-Esino Train Station. Hold on tight. You are about to see why I think I found Heaven. I know, I say that every time I see something new in Italy, but I do thin...

Matt Does Lake Como: Volume II

As promised, I have returned for a second dose of Heaven. And this time my camera actually did not die until I was sitting on the train platform snapping pictures of myself for kicks while I waited. The journal entry today comes from what those in Heaven call the right hand of God. It is true. I am journaling from the top of the world, literally and as a reflection of how I feel. I am sitting at a bench in a glade edged with a simple slat fence and massive olive trees that seem more like sent...

Venice to Rome

... tried the italian beer which was pretty good. After
dinner I headed back to the hostel and grabbed a map to plan my
siteseeing journey for tommorow. There is so much to see in Rome and I
really only have a day and a half so I have to be efficient. After
planning the next day I headed down to the bar for a few drinks. Of
course I met more Aussies and a girl from Victoria that just graduated

... refreshed for a scary landing in Rome.  Paul was just waking up so I don't think he noticed anything askew.  I winced and sucked in some air when the winds buffeted the plane at just a hundred feet or so above the runway.  We hit a bit hard and somewhat misaligned such that the pilot had to correct before the front wheels touched.  From my angle it was just enough to wake me fully; from Paul's it was a typical landing.  "Really, that was scary for you ...

... pink arm digging in my bag! I was almost the victim of a Roma (gypsy) child pick pocket! Unfortunately, Rome has a lot of poor people, which you see begging in the street, some holding small babies or puppies. So the Roma population makes it's living in these manners. Sad to also see so much trash on the city streets, homeless living openly under bridges and parks, waste in the Tiber river. On our final day we visited St. Peter's square and ...

'Roaame if you want to....Roaame around the world'

Cinque Terre is such an unbelievably picturesque, postcard perfect place it's just not funny. Waking up with the sun streaming in and the fresh sea air outside our door, i decided it was pertinent that i head out for a glorious morning jog to combat the oil consumption and second consecutive gorgeing. As the Ipod pumped out rockin hits, i ran like a madman in my floral boardshorts past the locals, through the steep narrow staircases and thin, windy ...

... to eat it yet so he invited me to try some. Actually, it was delicious and after some not so tasty airplane food it was out of this world. It reminded me of a moister strawberry shortcake. Yum ... When our train arrived all the seats were already taken so I proceeded to stack my luggage and stand, however, Robert went to other cars further back to see if there were any seats left. He found two, two cars back with an Argentinian girl that had ...

After we made the short walk around the corner to Plaza Nevanya where we had some wine and appetizers. We walked around the city that night until about midnight.
