We left El Chalten on such a high after a good trek heading for El Calafate 220km to the south. We had a slight blip on the way as after 190kms we ran out of petrol…Yep the minibus we were on thought hewasn’t going to have enough but thought what the heck I’ll try and make it anyway. Well he didn’t. We were stuck there for about 40min until more petrol turned up. Another first for the trip. El Calafate is a relatively non-descript touristy ...

... Measuring 35km in length and 5km in width, the glacier is unusually advancing (up to 2m per day). Every once in a while, part of its snout advances far enough to reach the Peninsula de Magallanes to dam the Brazo Rico arm of Lago Argentino. This causes tremendous pressure to build up, and after a few years a river cuts through the dam, collapsing it with ...

... you were wondering, it is a ridiculously small boat to go around the world in.

Just as we were about to leave to continue our journey north, we got talking to an American guy in our guesthouse who was working at a ranch two hours inland from San Julian. He visits San Julian every week or so to keep in touch with civilisation since itīs just him and one ranch hand that look after 600,000 acres of land with no electricity, hot water, ...
