bad knees, icebergs, glaciers, condors and more!

So, I slept halfway on the bus to Torres. My bus was just Richard and I from the group. Afer being told there was only 3 buses, all of which we had seen sin other greoup members, we were convinced they had missed the bus (NOTE: Mesita grande is a great restaurant in PN) But there was a 4th bus and all was good. The weather was AMAZING we had a fantastic view of the Torres already! Saw Guancos (relatives of llamas) Ostriches and condors way up high. Not a bad start!! Had to wait 1.5hours for t...

Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Crossed the border into chile from argentina - all roads here are the usual rock, gravel and dirt. Everything around is just open space with short stubby grass (pampa). Saw wild guanacos (llamas), rhea (like a smaller ostrich) and can run just as fast - we raced one in the bus and the bus was going about 30 mph. Many hours on the bus (about 6 in total but broken up by several stops for banos (bathrooms). Our guide gave us a demonstration on the bus of an favorite argentinian drink/ritual - ma...

NaviMag Ferry to Puerto Natales

... very cold there and we were all fully rugged up in thermals and waterproof jackets. The amazing thing was that as the ferry was delayed we were to get an extra night on the ferry - bonus for me as I was really enjoying the trip. Tuesday 31st March . A fine day on waking and we were called to watch the ferry pass a very narrow passage on it's way to Porto Natales. The ferry had something like 20etres clearance either side at the narrowest point of the passage. We packed ...

... a chance to see blue whales but we only saw a pilot whale and a few sea-lions. We met some lovely people on the trip and made some good friends(not as good as the ones we have got back home though). The last few days were allot clearer and we were able to enjoy the view and visit a huge glacier Peo 7. Despite the weather we did have fun and got some good photos. I know still no pictures. I'm trying my best OK.

Hiking in Southern Patagonia - Torres del Paine

... t permit us much more explanation than this, but we were not about to pay double for such terrible accomodations. Eventually they let us leave, with only the words (roughly translated), "Fine then, leave without paying!" And so we did, at least in their eyes. Despite that slight misadventure, we boarded our bus to El Calafate, Argentina with only a tinge of bitterness, and more good memories than anything else. The photos will speak for themselves.

Breakdown, with a view

... list of 5 people, and it was 4 now. I was discussing my options with him when he said dismissively, 'Why don't you just come back at 6?´ I thought to myself, 'Why don't YOU just kiss my ASS,' but instead, after a short appraising pause, I said, OK. I went for a nice hike, and when I got back at 5:30 he came out of the store when he saw me and told me he had a spot for me. Apparently my powers for sycophancy have not left me. The evening was ...

... it's dark now and I keep poking my head out the door expecting Mike to arrive, I tell the entire work crew who are from the gas exploration camp behind the hill about our adventure. The questions are flying as the wine is being drunk and I still keep refusing. I am worried sick about Mike, finally he arrives and or American Friend Jeff is with him. The tire is repaired and the two of them are hungry and frozen. I hurry them inside telling them to eat. The ...

Before I head off to torres del Paine

... it was certainly a highlight of the Ferry trip and I was certainly fortunate to have had this experience. The last day in terms of scenery was also amazing, and the weather held out for us. The many narrow channels we sailed through and then it opened up to lowlands and the mountains of Torres Del Paine in the distance, oh my god this was what I came here for. We eventually docked at Puerto Natales and I made my way to Erratic Rock hostel. I leave for the 5 day hike ...

Wow! We had another great day. Once the ship had dropped anchor in the harbor we loaded onto a tender with our tour group and had a short ride to the dock. There we loaded onto our bus where Rosa Marioso, our guide, welcomed us to Chile. We headed out of town on our way to an<br>estancia or ranch which is located on Riesco Island about 95 km from town. We were on what appeared to me to be a fairly new concrete highway and we ran along at a good speed. Our sharp eyed ...
