21. Popayan but no Olive Oil

Tired and hungover, we made the 2 hour journey to Popayan, south of Cali. Popayan is a small town with an old centre filled with white buildings. We had the tastiest soups so far here- one called Ajiaco (traditional in Bogota too) which is a bit like watercress and potato but with bits of chicken in it and avocado and rice on the side. I had been …

Silvia Market and Popayan

Silvia is not on the Colombian tourism trail; it makes up for half a page in the Lonely Planet and is pretty much unknown to those that live outside Popayan and the Cauca Region. Silvia is not particularly pretty, compared to other Colombian high mountain towns, but Silvia is different on Tuesdays when, it becomes the marketplace for the Guambiano …

Crossing over to Colombia

When I first booked my flights to come to South America Colombia wasn't on the itinerary. I hadn't done much research into it, but the idea of visiting a country plagued by drug lords and a violent history wasn't that appealing. At least that was my perception of it - Colombia's bad reputation of years ago was what stuck in the mind, despite not …

We made it to Columbia!

Lori:

I have lost track of the days somehow. We have been in travelling mode, just getting out of Ecuador and into Columbia has been our driving force for the last few days. Leaving Otavolo was surprisingly difficult and sad. We actually felt quite comfortable there; it felt more like home to us than anywhere we have been so far. Yesterday …

Popayan: Colombia's Colonial Treasure

A travel blog entry by jeffwright

September 13-15

Popayan's most defining feature, which by no coincidence was the reason I went to visit it, is its whitewashed, colonial architecture.

Popayan’s colonial history dates back to 1537, when the Spanish established it as a key stopping point between Cartagena, Colombia and Quito, Ecuador.

The Spanish …

Both the staff and the guests at Hostel Trail are great. I thought the place was clean and the room prices were a good deal.

Good stop over place, bit noisy if room onto the road, but did not matter as we did not stay long here.

The owners are really friendly and cool and provided all kinds of information about activities and sightseeing in Popayan. The rooms are simple but clean and comfortable. There is a great living room space, book exchange, kitchens, and little dining area. The location is very good and they hostel also organizes some activities. I would reccommend this to other travelers!

Great place run by a nice Scottish couple. The town can be a bit transient but worth a pit stop between going or coming from Ecuador.
