Hostelling International Salar de Uyuni

So after a couple of days there we headed to the coldest place on the planet. Did I mention before that Uyuni is cold??? We got the train from Tupiza which runs like every 2 days which was surprisingly toasty only to arrive in the freezing cold hole at 12 midnight. Ran off the train into the first hotel which was about 10 euro per person. that's expensive for Bolivia. It was pretty cold indoors too. So here I am, in Uyuni, after a 4-day tour of the Southwest Circuit and the Salar de Uyuni. It was a fantastic trip, I highly recommend it for everyone. We spent two nights in Uyuni with a day trip out to the salt flats. This used to be a sea that has basically evaporated off leaving a huge expanse of salt! Looks a bit like a massive beach with no sea! We spent a long time doing some photographic stunts..(see photos in upcoming entry!). Alot of time and effort put into those photos! I have just spent the past 4 days on a jeep trip from Tupiza to Uyuni in Bolivia. The highlight of the trip was crossing the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flats in the world. Day Two We arose, as instructed in time for breakfast at 5:30. We were supposed to leave at 6 but didn't count on 'Israeli time'. I don't know why people who have just spent 3 years getting shouted at to get out of bed at silly hours of the morning suddenly cant when they're supposed to want to out of their own free will - but throughout the trip we were constantly being held up by them. Day Three This was a really short day, setting off at around 9 and finishing at around 4:30 - starting off with the spectacular Laguna Colorada - a deep red lake with rich green shores and hundreds of pink flamingos feeding on the plankton rich water. Upon leaving the lagoon the landscape quickly changed to pure desert as far as the eye could see before we stopped at some 'interesting' rock formations. The last few days have been amazing! Decided to take the popular 4x4 tour across the border from San Pedro to Uyuni with the tour company Cordillera Travel (a bit more expensive than some others but they werent bad and the covered the Border tax and Park Entry fees) and met some great people who were also on the tour. I knew the salt flats tour would involve some odd sights, but that was probably the last thing I was expecting - a blizzard in the desert! It occurred about half way through our first day, after we had visited a number of lakes, hotsprings, geysers and other desert scenes, and resulted in the cancellation of our trip to the Laguna Collorada, though we made up for this by buying up all the wine and rum and in the small shop and having a snowball war, which was a good alternative in my book! A long driving day from Potosi to Uyuni. The hostel we stayed at had an amazing pizza restaurant, where we had yummy pizza, followed by chocolate cake, cookies and ice cream for pudding. Mmmm!
