Obama for President

We flew into New York late last night. Today we went to explore the Big Apple and our first city on the east side of America. What a day to be in New York... Election Day! There was definately a very strong Obama vibe all over the city as we explored it. We started off the day with a walk through Central Park.. and of course a few more hundred squirrel sightings. And yes.. I am not sick of them yet =) We also saw alot of Mexicans women with babies in strollers that were definately not Mexican...

Las Vegas & New York

Well we finally made it to New York - more on that in a minute - first i will update you about Vegas We got randomly selected for secuity screening again - apparently it is because we have one way tickets so it will probably happen every time - 3 times already. Vegas was great - we could see the Bellagio fountain from our room at Bally's. We did some shopping at the miracle mile shops and also M&M world - 4 stories of M&M stuff also Coke World - two stories of coke stuff! Went to Free...

Day One New York

Well after our mission of last night and then having to check out and back in this morning we had an alright day in New York We braved the subway to go to TIme Square to exchange our voucher for the Hop on Hop of Tour bus thing. Then we went round on that for about 2 hours. We went to the Phantom of the Opera and our seats were in the 3rd row back from the front - off to the side a little but otherwise great seats! Then we had dinner at Planet Hollywood - we have these smart cards for heaps o...

Day Two New York

We tried to get up and leave the hostel early today but didn't actually leave that early after all. Decided to go up the Empire State Building again (daylight view) - this time we managed to beat most of the crowds, although there were still quite long lines. Did the Skyride thing which is a virtual tour of New York in a motion movie theater thing. Then we caught the subway down town to go see the Statue of Liberty. Got our tickets and then saw the line was about 1 1/2 blocks long. Thankfully...

Return to New York

Didn't have access to wireless last night so were not able to update you on our day. Had a busy day yesterday sightseeing at the Niagara Falls and Toronto. Crossed the border early in the day then spent time seeing the falls from the Canadian side. There was ice everywhere (you should be able to see in the photos) - apparently though the falls have only completely frozen once in 1934. Went up the Skylon Tower and viewed the falls from above. Also saw an IMAX movie on the history of the falls ...

Back in New York

Well we got up early today to brave the crowds at the Statue of Liberty. It is the worse organised thing anywhere - worse than the airport. The first ferry sailing was supposed to be 9:30 so from our experience of seeing the long lines the other day we decided to get there about 8am. We got to the line about 8:15 and there was a group of about 20 school kids in the line already and that was about it. So time ticked on and we were thinking surely they will start security checking people BEFORE...

Now I know why they named it twice!

Where to start with NYC.... it's an amazing city, far too much to see in a few days. In fact I think you could probably go there every year on holidays and never get bored or actually see everything!!

After outfoxing another downpour by being on a bus during it I arrived in New York City on Sunday night. The bus drove within a few blocks of my hostel then proceeded downtown into the buildings that are so familiar from tv and films but at the same time completely unknown! Caught the sub...

New York City

New York was fantastic. Manhattan is a great town. We stayed at a hostel on the upper west side. The HI there is pretty nice. We were only a few blocks from Central Park and walked most of the city. The highlight of the trip was a pub crawl on Friday night. We went out with 30 or 40 people from the hostel and met some great people from all over the world. We spent most of the night hangint out with some Swedish girls. Very cool. First we went to a bar that had $6 pitchers, which is phenomenal...

I had 3 days in New York, my first stop on the journey around the World. I needed to get to New Zealand for the start of my semester, on the 14th. I spend most of the morning of the first day making plans on what I wanted to see. then I took the subway to Times Square, then followed Broadway north until Central Park. Then past Carnegie Hall and back to times Square, East on 42nd St passed the Grand Library to Central Station. Unfortunately the building was being renovated, so I could not see ...

For the money- Great!

from brezza
First of all I am not a Hostel person- I'm way over the age of the average hosteler. I stayed at the Hostelling International for a total of 4 nights and I wrote above average as compared to the price.

First: The rooms are clean and there are bed linens

every day. There should be more bathrooms, but if you get up early you can get a shower without problems. The boss, Katrina is very professional.

If you'd rather spend your money on shopping rather than sleeping, go for it! The area is so so, but I didn't feel unsafe. Oh and the rooms with the private bath are the best- but they are almost always occupied!

Brilliant Place!

6 mates and I stayed at the Hostelling International for 7 nights from 19th April to 26th April. First impressions weren't the best. As there were 7 of us in total, we had originally booked one 4 bed dorm and another 3 mates had booked a 4 bed dorm with only those 3 having the room. When we arrived there seemed to be a problem with our reservation. They told us that they didn't have 4 bed dorms left until the Thursday morning. However although at first a little annoyed, they gave us a family room for the same price for the two nights, meaning we had more space!

Although situated on 103rd street, do not be alarmed by the location on the map! On the second day we purchased a week long subway pass and it only ever took us 15 minutes and the most to get to South Ferry, the far end of the city where tourists can get the statten island ferry for free. Times Square is also only 10 minutes on the subway.

Rooms are clean and spacious, bathrooms are average but clean and I would definately reccommend the cafe they have there. I always bought a large tea and bagel with ham and cheese every breakfast and it worked out a mere £2.50! Internet access is fast and the information spreaded around the hostel was useful.

I would reccommend stayers taking the pub crawl they offer. As New York is such a large city, at first it was hard to recognise where a good area of bars would be. We found out by the end of tour, east village is a good spot to hang out!

All in all, a very enjoyable stay and was sad to leave. Would reccommend to anyone on a budget and even those who are the first time traveller, this is definately a hostel that is worth the visit!

Although nothing to do with the hostel, I would definately reccommend going to a Yankees game. It was great fun and only at a cost of roughly £11!

Great value

I would strongly recommend this hostel. Great price, good range of useful facilities (including laundry room and kitchen), clean, friendly staff, and in a safe and accessible location. The tours and activities they organise and good fun and cheap - especially great if you're travelling alone, as I was. Will return!

Great Hostel! Coming back for sure!

Hi. I have to say I was a little afraid of staying in a hostel. I usually stay at regular hotels when I travel, but having to save money to stay more days, I decided to stay at the HINY. I was very pleased with my first impression. The lobby is very nice, clean, with a "Information Desk" and a "Security Desk". The staff was very friendly and I had no trouble with my internet reservation.

I stayed at the 4bed room, so it was very clean and quiet. My roomates were all nice and friendly. We went out together sometimes, because the staff put all the "Lone traveleres" together, and that was really nice of them.

There is a nice kitchen there (used sometimes and never had a problem). The Hostel also organize tours around NY. I went to the Harlem tour ($7) and it was a great morning. Didn't want to go to Harlem alone, and with the other guests and the guide I felt safe enough to go.

Internet is ok at the Hostel, but you can find better prices (and better PCs) at a indian xerox place on the same block.

The location was another concern, but 103rd St. is not that bad and the neighborhood is fine. Not the best in NY, but it was safe for me. I used to come back from the subway always after midnight and never had a problem. (My opinion about that is comparing to the place I live, wich is very violent and dangerous. If you live in a nice, calm place, you will be a little afraid on your first days, because there are some people just standing by the sidewalk at night...)

Male bathrooms were ok. Privacy level was good, you have a private place to change clothes and all. Cleanliness was good too, but I think it all depends on the guests that are in the same floor. In my 14 days there, i havent had a problem.

All things considered, i have to say that I had a great time at the hostel, would go back for sure. If you don't want to spend hundreds of dollar on accomodation, it is a great place to stay. I was there for 14 days.

Ps: Sorry for my English. I'm just trying to help some undecided people here...

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Clean, Safe and Convenient

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at Hostelling International in September of 2004 for 3 nights and I had a very pleasant experience. It was my first time staying at a hostel and the staff was very patient and kind with answering all my questions. I brought a lock with me and utilized the lockers that are provided in each room, so I never felt unsure about the security of my belongings. The bathrooms were reasonably clean (though a little more bleach here and there wouldn't have hurt) and there were no bugs or critters. Thank goodness!! HI is about one minute's walk to the nearest subway station, so it was very convenient. I met some really cool people and I used the cafe and internet services provided by HI. All in all, I had a pretty good time. I would recommend it to anyone!

A walk on the dark side

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is an OK hostels to stay at. The rooms are dimly lit, but fairly spacious, and there are lockers in each room. The bathrooms however are messy, unclean, and even when they are cleaned, they still look as though they have not been cleaned. The showers are pretty gruesome, especially as most of them (on the floor that i was on) were located next to a window made out of wire-netting, so there was no real privacy. The showers that are not near the window, are often too unbearable to step in. I don't think it is one of the worst hostels to stay in, but it has alot of catching up to do.

Not bad!

We stayed here for 7 nights & found it basically fine - at least for a hostel. However...

1. We had a confirmed reservation (via the hostel itself, not an agent) for a 4-bed room, but had to take a 6-bed when we arrived - with no reason given by the hostel. Take it or leave it!

2. Bathrooms were cleaned daily, but should have been done more often (maybe EARLY in the AM so bathrooms would have been clean & paper towels filled & trash emptied BEFORE the AM washing rush.) Also, half the showers were out during 6 of our 7 days, with no attempt to fix them.

3. Dorm hallways are VERY echo-y, so there is much more noise than there should be, especially irritating after 11 PM or so till at least 2 AM. You can hear complete conversations many feet away!

4. Customer service is VERY up & down, depending on who's working the desks.

5. There is computer/internet access for a fee; however the system often drops you before you've used up your time. And the printer isn't guaranteed to work - tho' it did for us.

However, HI-NY is quite satisfactory, generally.

Security is good for such a busy place & the halls always quieted down by 1:30 AM, so you could get at least 5-7 hours of decent sleep.

BUT, one final piece - referring to the women who used our bathroom during our week. A good bit of the bathroom cleanliness problem was made by the RESIDENTS! Few women cleaned up after themselves in the showers or sink area, leaving much water, LOTS of hair & other obnoxious personal detritus around, globs of toothpaste, etc.

Hostels are a co-op situation; doesn't anyone heed the basic cooperative cleanliness rules most of our mothers taught us? I was NOT the only one gagging at the mess!

Good but crowded

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a large and modern hostel fairly centrally located next to Central Park in the Upper West Side of NYC. It's accessible by 2 subway lines and buses, from the east side you have to walk through a public housing estate to get there, but iI had not problems. The hostel is very secure, the dorm I was in had 12 beds and each has a locker, which is good, but was pretty cramped and the lighting is dim. The dorms are modern and clean. The only real downside of the hostel is the number of dorms/people per bathroom. On the floor I was on (2nd) there must have been about 10 female dorms and only 1 bathroom, with 4 showers and 3 toilets. At around 8am there were long queues for the showers and even queues for the washbasins, and water all over the floor and overflowing bins etc. There's also a cafe downstairs (but not very good, better to go outside), internet access at a reasonable price, and lockers to store your stuff once you've checked out. Given that there are a number of other hostels in NYC, I'd be tempted to check those out before going for this one.

Great value hostel

The HI-NY was excellent! I had a 4-bed room for US$35. I initially booked for 3 nights (just wanted to check the place out) and booked another 4 nights since I liked it so much. I saved so much instead of staying in a cheapish $60-80 hotel. It was very clean, had all the facitilities you would expect with a nice coffee shop to boot. It was also nice that the staff seemed to give me roommates who were the same age bracket as I was. I was dreading any post-high school/college party girls in my room who would wake me up at some godforsaken hour.

Instead, I roomed with more "mature" girls like me :-). The airconditioning was strong and lovely after a day of walking and it was nice to sit out in the garden (with table and chairs, complete with small fountain) with a soda, planning the next days' adventure. It's a block away from the 103rd stop of the 1,9 subway and a block away from the post office. I found some great pizza places nearby also. The other reviews are so true...you get to see New Yorkers living their lives instead of being stuck in a hotel/tourist area.

LOVE IT!

For the discerning 'traveller' who doesn't mind sharing. Great place. Well run, clean, lively, safe hostel in a lovely refurbished building. Couldn't rate it highly enough. Have stayed here on numerous occasions and have very happy memories of my stays.
