Ile De La Barthelasse Avignon, Provence, France, 84000, (04)-90-86-30-39-
We had a week to spare before continuing our skiing in eastern France, so we decided to take our host in Andorra's advice and head to Avignon for a few nights. A few hours east of Andorra, we headed through Carcassonne, which has the most spectacular walled old city ever, not to mention the more dubious honour of being where Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves was filmed. We arrived in Avignon and, after a few unplanned circuits of the city's walls, found the Bagatelle campground in the middle of t...
Avignon, France a_schafsAfter 3 days of beach, sun, smelly toilets and very friendly people (except that ******* who stole money and ID to a nice girl we met there, while he was swimming with one of us), we thought it was time to move! So we took a train to the heart of Provence, and it was Avignone! A nice city, famous for the Popes Palace (where many popes lived for 1300 to 1400) and the Saint-Bénezet bridge. We stayed in a nice camping (Bagatelle) on an island in the middle of the bridge. There was also a big swi...

Avignon, Provence, France travelledkiwi... bit grotty and run down and a bit poor… that does not normally put us off though so not sure what was wrong. The town was under going a fair bit of renovation and rejuvenation work and has a hell of a lot of potential as great place to visit…so perhaps in 5 years that is exactly what it will be. We went for a wander and found the amphitheatre which was like a mini coliseum in the center of town. It ...
Arles, Provence, France darrenhough74... over 1.5 million tourists each year as it is the source of a natural spring. It's wierd seeing a fast flowing river and then walking 50 metres "upstream" and there only being a trickle.. and then a bit further and no water... nothing but a big cliff straight up!
The town itself is nestled in a valley and is particularly pretty at dusk when rocks take on the colours of the sunset ...
Wait a minute, we’re not traveling to Italy until tomorrow…but we spent the day in Arles exploring Roman architecture.
The biggest site in town is the amphitheatre, or coliseum. Glimpses through different side streets pull you even closer like the hub it has always been. Huge in scale, some seating is till original and large towers give sweeping views of the ...
... was home to Van Gogh’s most famous time of painting from 1888-1890.
Shadows on the hills.
Sketch the trees and daffodils.
Catch the breeze and winter chills.
In colours on the snowy linen land.
I was just thrilled to be in the same place that inspired this painter. To know that I was beneath that same starry starry sky ...
... we were nearly blown to Marseille. Tomorrow we are going on a lunchtime cruise on the Rhone with more food and wine and before that visiting the famous bridge and hopefully we will have time to go over to see the nearby fort in the afternoon.
Then we start the final run north - first a night at Beaujolais, then 2 nights at Strasbourg and one last night at Munich before we leave Big ...
... at the local boulongerie. Victory Day public holiday, so markets we were going to visit on our day trip were not operating. On to the Luberon - picturesque drive through countryside, lavender not yet in bloom. First stop Roussillon, where all buildings have different shades of local red ochre. An hour here to wander along the pretty streets & up to the viewpoint near the church. Next stop Gordes ...
Avignon, France traveltragicSo after blowing my time and money budget in so many ways during my stay in Andalusia, I was anxious to get back into cycling mode and start stealth camping again. I caught a train north to a town called Xativa, about a day south of Valencia. From here I bombed it up to and through Barcelona and along the stretch dubbed 'La Costa Brava'. The Costa Brava was an absolutely spectacular stretch. It is the rocky coastline of the East Pyranees which separate Spain from France. Challenging ...
