... provide colour and intrigue, nor witches market selling baskets of sweets and llama fetus, in fact the Indian culture of the Amazon doesn’t register in the city at all. There are plenty of cheap clothe shops, more shoe shops than Debbie has ever seen but all selling the same products. And our first full on experience of Christmas decorations and lights, the locals really go in for them and shops were full of singing Father Christmas, flashing lights and bobbing Christmas trees!
Manaus, State of Amazonas, Brazil suenson_taylors... port wall by the floating harbor that shows the different river levels in different years. The highest to date is in 2009.
We also disembarked our boat into what was described as canoes to visit a marshy swamp off the main river. These motorized little craft just about managed to navigate their way through the shallow waters left at the end of the dry season to get to a local 'camp’ where the buildings were constructed on large trunks of trees chopped ...
To reach the city of Manaus in the heart of the Amazon, we had no choice but to travel by boat. At this point, the road becomes too rough and dangerous (due to bandits) to travel by truck. So we boarded the Madeira river boat, a boat used by locals to travel from the port of Porto Velho for four days and nights up to the capital of the Amazon region, Manaus. Our boat was delayed by one day on our arrival in Porto Velho. The next day we were due to leave at 10am. Having ...
Manaus, State of Amazonas, Brazil ellie_cross... there being no outside window, the cloud of mosquitos swirling around the room apparently found the hallway window, which was enclosed by bars and a metal panel that swung shut, to be a sufficient point of entry. The sheets which had a large stencil of
"Hotel Ideal" painted onto them seemed clean, although understandably so, as polyester is apparently easy to clean. One positive was the air conditioner which efficiently cooled the room, at ...

... in Denmark. He has been staying here for about a week, so he offered to take us around the city. We cruised around the mercado centro, a little, and did a some shopping in the super-market, where you can buy freaking everything. Manaus is a pretty interesting city, it has a distinct smell to it(not odorous, just something unique), and it's very eclectic. Most of the buildings have an older design style, and it's busy everywhere you go ...
Manaus, State of Amazonas, Brazil ryanflemington... the trees ensured a relatively mosquito-free zone. That only lasted so long before the reality of enduring the night had sunk in as we returned. Now I perhaps went a bit overboard purchasing this line of clothing from Ex Officio that weaves Permathrin -- a bug repellent -- into my socks, pants, shirt and hat, in addition to my deet-based repellent. The first night I decided to test how well my clothes would protect me on their own (minus the areas of ...
Manaus, State of Amazonas, Brazil barry0fisher... when I got off the toilet I couldn't stand up but fell unconcious to the ground. I don't know how long I was laying there, with my pants down, with my face in the dirt, but the door was locked and once I gained conciousness people were knocking heavily on the door. My ears felt like they were boiling, was seriously dizzy and I couldn't walk, but I KNEW I HAD to get up, or at least get out of the bathroom, amongst people so that they could help me, because I knew if I didn't ...
