Rome November 2009

I went to Rome for Turkey Day. Italians don't know about Thanksgiving, but the Xmas decorations sprung out on Friday, right on time. Santa Claus and Baroque architecture, childish to ancient, profane to sanctimonious. In Rome, a city where nothing is new, the opposites don’t attract, they just tolerate each other in a stand-off. Lingerie ads on the churches.

Rome is the eternal city, 2765 years old, according to the ...

... numbered the Brits . having been to Barcelona we were barracking for them. Loads of police were present everywhere also perhaps because of the soccer too. As it turned out at the campsite it was televised and some campers had travelled from UK for the match. Barca won as it turned out.We enjoyed Rome but felt 2 days was enough as history overload was taking its toll. We planned to leave next day and head to Florence area and the Mugello racetrack to go to the Moto GP.

Rome (Francais)

Tonight we are having some girls over to our apartment, cooking them dinner and then taking them out. Mike went to London for the weekend, Dam went to Amsterdam, and they will both be back on Sunday to catch the Italy soccer game that night. C i a o for now

... went on his face and the guy went back to the desk and got the special menu. We decided we would get only 3 plates and share with Daycia to keep the cost down. In Italy they have this little charge called the table charge it was 2.40 euro per person plus a service charge of 12 to 15 % so you don't have to tip but you do get hit. Water was 5 euros a coke was 5 euros Terry wanted wine and before we new it we had a 125 euro bill in ...

We asked about lunch and were told there were three bars on the piazza. We picked the closest one. It was a narrow space with a high display case full of panini and dolci. We ordered due panini ...

... both Medici popes. Later on we took a tour of some of the secret rooms in the Medici palace which had some rooms from Franseco and Cosimo Medici as well as a secret passsage that ran from this palace to the newly built Pitti Palace. Unfortunately that passage isnt open to the public. Later on we went to a little Italian restaurant called Il Porcupino which means the Porcupine and had some great pasta with walnut sauce. It was way cool!

Pride and Prejudice

... I did get the feeling that the Sistine Chapel had rather too much art - I ended up leaving with a severe neck ache caused by staring at the ceiling whilst my audioguide babbled on. St Peter's Basilica is HUGE (and rather show-offy!). There is a bronze altar type thing in the middle, which is partly made of bronze stolen from the Pantheon - imagine. All the sculptures in there are made to fit perspective - ie the ones higher up are about twice the ...

... physically and becoming the centre of Italy's film industry until the early 1960s. The 1970s and '80s were marked by more violent transformations, namely those of some radical student groups (who had a long list of complaints about Italy's left-wing governments) into right-wing terrorists. The Brigate Rosse (Red Brigade) was the most notorious group, going so far as to kidnap and eventually murder former prime minister Aldo Moro in Rome in 1978.

The rational side of my brain told me to get over it and accept that she was gone. I continued my venture towards Termini in my sad daze wondering about the rest of my trip. Would I meet anyone else like her? Once I got to Amsterdam, I'd be able to talk about her again with Justin & Meika and in ...
