Ladrilleros 209 Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile, 56-61-410-081
5 hours bus ride at 8am to get into Chile & Puerto Natales. Stark change in scenery as well as the weather - lots of rain and it is dammmmn cold here! Itīs not just London cold, itīs colder than Coventry cold! Fortunately weīre all prepped for the big hike over the next few days. Torres del Paine here we come!
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile ashah_008If we knew what we now know prior to arriving at Torres Del Paine we may not even have a story to tell. Having said that we were given 3 separate yet slight warnings which we chose to ignore out of pure naivety.. Here are the warnings: 1. "If you do it, I hope to see you back here alive" 2. "The pass is closed, don't do the Grande, no rangers or facilities" 3. "3 days ago my friend trekked for 4 hours in 60 cm deep snow" Now, what we should have known / read before is... 1 "The Grande Circuit...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile kc2009Sadly, my time at this end of the world was limited so I didn't have the time to do a full trek in the Torres Del Paine national park in Chile, so I saw what I could by doing a day trip from Calafate to Puerto Natales. Torres del Paine, Chile's spectacular national park in southern Patagonia, is a wonderland of craggy, granite peaks, snow clad mountains, glacier-fed lakes, waterfalls and rivers, pampas and thick Magellanic forests, meadows, forests and no matter where you look, fantastic scen...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile nixbOkay, so we last left you in Puerto Montt on our way to Puerto Natales to pick up a new monster car. We arrived at Punta Arenas airport and our car hire agent was there to meet us to hand over the new motor. This time we got a jeep rather than a pick-up truck, but still a Nissan (a Mistral) and quite a lot older than the last car we had. It came complete with bull bars on the front, headlight protectors and a couple of stone chips in the front windscreen, this was obviously a sign of the stan...
Puerto Natales, Chile shieldsontour
... like many South American countries. Luckily I eat fish but to give you an idea, their idea of a national fish dish is grilled salmon with a slice of tomato and processed cheese on top. Not particularly inventive...although the salmon was very nice. The boat left 8 hours late. These things happen when you travel and you have to just accept them, there is no point getting wound up about it because there is nothing you could do. This meant the boat trip would now be 4 nights instead of 3 ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile littlemisbakpak... 200 US Dollars for having an onion in his backpack! Thats an expensive onion. Puerto Natales is one of Chiles 2 main towns in Southern Patagonia, and is the main access point to the Torres Del Paine national park. Many people hike in this extraordinary park for 4-9 days. Unfortunately we had only 2, but made the most of our time there. Patagonia is very cold, our tans fell off us as soon as we got off the bus. So after listening to a free talk on the park we ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile samandchantal... not had any luck in the past with the sunrise. This time I got it wrong as we were told the sunrise was beautiful. Oh well you cant have it all. We trekked up for around 9am. The one benefit we got from this was that it was quiet and there was no one else up there. The cloud then lifted completely and the Torres looked spectacular. They would be amazing to climb. We spent around three hours talking to a Brit called Robb who was now going to live in New Zealand ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile feeandpete... to walk. It took a total of 17 volunteers over 3 hours to mountain rescure Mick and bring him back to the base camp. Over all the situation was a disaster. The volunteers where great but the guy who was in charge of the park delayed and delayed with the helicopter. He wouldn´t dispatch emergency help until his insurance information went through. Thank god he wasn´t on his death bed cause they would have left him die in the park. After going back and forth and ...
Puerto Natales, Chile linseypaddock... clouds and light rain. After a while it became obvious that the weather would not clear up any time soon, and there was no news of the bridge getting fixed. So we decided to go back. Half way down the mountain, the rain eased up a bit and wind picked up (this is a common theme for us apparently.) When we got down, the weather at the base had cleared up completely, but clouds still surrounded the peaks of the Torres. The wind was steady at around 50 - 60 ...
