Wine & Mountains, a good combo

The first thing I noticed about Mendoza was that it was much warmer than BA, a welcome relief. I arrived early in the morning so had the full day to explore the city. I immediately met a couple of other travellers whilst checking in, Lukas from Switzerland, and Antje from Germany. It really is very easy to meet people, you don“t even need to make much of an effort!

We all explored the city together - not that much to see to be fair. Having said that there is a really nice main square, ...

loving argentina

ahhh argentina ... mendoza! LOVE it! a very pretty city wih streets lined with trees - the streets are wide because of an earthquaske that levelled it last century. Argentina is a litel more american, the people though just as friendly and many know NZ. arrived over the andes yeserday - an incredible bus ride that had hints of the road into milford from the homer tunnel - though the mountains more red, less snow has survived teh summer and cactis. the border over into argentina is a giant han...

Mendoza

Mendoza is the most famous wine region in Argentina and so a lot of our activities revolved around wine starting with the bisride from Bariloche to Mendoza. There was only 4 or 5 of us on the bus for the first part of the trip and the "bus waiter" handed out bingo sheets and so we played bingo - in Spanish! It was fun figuring out what numbers he was actually calling out and Jeff even won (the dude checked he had gotten everything right;) and got a bottle of wine.

We got there early mo...

12km, 9 glasses of wine on bikes with cops

... drinking and cycling was uncomfortable..

One of the most amusing things was the local police. They have one guy on a motorbike who goes up and down the wine route basicly checking that your not in trouble, aparently if your too drunk they arrange for you to get home... A couple of time when we stopped to take a photo he pulled over to have a quick chat.

When we got back to Mr Hugo's about 5 hours ...

Wine country, South American style!

So, Craig and I flew out to Mendoza for the weekend and we ate/drank way too much (again). Mendoza has 900 wineries so we pretty much had our pick of things.

Aside from losing my bank card in Mendoza, I would say it was an amazing trip. Definitely a different feel than Napa. The country side is beautiful and every house practically had vineyards as their backyard. I think Malbecs are my new favorite red. Good stuff...

... adventure! We flew over the mountains, did circles, got higher and higher and had a great view over Mendoza and its surroundings… the feeling of flying is just too good! Unfortunately, time passed by so fast as always and 30 minutes later we were back on solid ground. I would do it again right nooooow!

Mendoza: High Andes and Low Vineyards

... Plaza Independencia, with its massive fountain, benches and green lawns and noticed there were artists everywhere. We had luckily arrived for the weekend arts and crafts fair. I noticed throughout the country that many Argentinos are bohemians with a great talent and love for the arts. In Mendoza, we saw Argentino hippies selling various bead necklaces and other jewelry typical of Telegraph Avenue, musicians thumping out beats on ...

... of vino tinto (Red Wine). This is one of the smallest productions in all of the Mendoza region. All of there wine is fermented in cement vats. The cement vat does not allow for fast changing in temperature when fermenting the wine. The tasting was amazing. We first started with there Melbec this wine was young and fruity. Due to the young age of the wine, it provided a sharp pull near the jaw line quickly after swallowing. After this wine we tried ...
