After a bit, a man in an orange shirt came over and said he was with security there and it is the Fijian way if someone sees a lone ...

... kava: this is a drink made out of a powdered local root. It is used as a ceremonial drink and mostly by men for social drinking, although women do drink it too. It is mildly intoxicating and makes your lips and mouth numb after drinking it. An acquired taste. I had tried some on my first trip to Fiji with Wolf. It had an unpleasant, chalky taste and it did make my lips a little numb. I wasn't inclined to try it again.
