Wine Capital

Mendoza is wicked! And not just for the wine! We did a wine tour that NOBODY TOLD US was about 10k each way!!! So we decided to not just do the wine tasting but also share a bottle for wine between the 4 of us at each stop. It definitly helped. The following day me Jack and Liz did a day of mountain trekking and rappelling, finishing off in natural hot springs. The trek was harder than expected and the rappels were 7m, 12m and 45m which luckily we didn´t get to see before we did it as it was ...

... bikes, Mendoza is famous for its wine and have never done it before so thought it would be rude not to. The bikes were lame and we only did about 12km but we saw 4 or 5 wineries and got to quaff down at least a glass at each so was probably for the best they put the bikes away at lunch time. Two morons from Denmark were supplimenting the tasters with a bottle at each place as well, not sure who they were trying to impress but it was funny watching them wobble ...

would you like some cheese with that WINE :)

... have this drink here that they call Fernet that they drink with coke its interesting I can´t really describe the taste though.

We got back to our hotel and then decided to walk around the city a bit it was getting dark and we were trying to find a pharmacy and a supermarket. This was a little more difficult than expected. I got to use my Spanish a little and asked for directions at like every corner. We all had a nice little adventure.

We shall see what tomorrow brings!

Mellowed out in Mendoza

... into pure tourists...exploring the pink Presidential Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the mini Big-Ben (a present from the UK), the Obelisco, some big boats and finally we watched some opera on the river bank. We decided to end our day-of-culture with a show in the citys traditional theater district. Bad plan - we ended up stuck in a performance involving 3 hours of monologues from a psycho called 'the Pillowman'...purely in spanish. didn ...

Mendoza: High Andes and Low Vineyards

... before the border, there was an incredibly steep, dirt and rocky road that led up a mountain ridge, supposedly to a Jesus statue or something like this. Ultimately, the road was blocked by a rockslide, but we were still gifted with magnificent views of the surrounding peaks and waterfalls and it was a fun and challenging drive - especially in a tiny hatchback. Several BMW dirt bikes came motoring past us making me extremeley jealous ...

... semester!

We had some difficulties getting back to Buenos Aires since Aimee had accidentally bought her ticket for the wrong return date (oops), but the kindest Argentines in the world were such angels... we later said that it was an "Easter miracle" that we got back to BA in time for classes on Monday. Ask me for the full story-- it's a great one!

Buenos Aires & Mendoza - 14th - 19th March

... game was pretty good, they won 3:0 and Riquelme played the full game, he was class as usual. I bought a Boca jersey afterwards for 45 pesos. I had to watch the match by myself cos I couldnt find Jimmy and Damien, cos I got there after them due to the fact that I had to wait around to see if my spanish teacher would come. But I met them after the game ended when we were waiting for all the rival fans to leave the stadium. The we and an Aussie and Kiwi girl who the guys ...

... its quite bitter and strong tasting, and given that I don't like tea or coffee or hot drinks in general it comes as no real surpise that I wasn't really a fan.) On the tour itself, the lousy map and directions we were furnished with made it impossible to attend our appointment at the first winery despite much cycling, so we skipped straight to the Cava de Weinert bodega and met Lionel, our knowledgable and passionate tour guide. Lionel gave us ...

Over the Andes one last time

... jumped between a record three different accomadations before we found one bearable. I highly recommend pounding the pavement for an hour or two in Mendoza before you book anything, fellow traveller. A shame we had so much trouble getting settled, I´d rather have been exploring the incredibly fertile (due to irrigation systems) and pastoral landscape surrounding the city proper. This is unequivocally a Meditteranean climate, searing heat from ten to ten ...
