Time for wine

So after a very short stay in Chile we were already in country number 5, Argentina. And what a welcome we received. We arrived at Hostel Independencia at 6 in the morning to find there were no beds ready until check out at 10. Just as we were sorting this at reception, 2 of the other guests arrived home from a night clubbing, 2 Chileans both called Andrés. We ended up chatting to them over breakfast and they invited us to join them and some other guests for a barbecue (or asado as they call i...

"MENDOOOZZZAAAA" - quote from McBain

Well what a couple of days it has been! I am sitting here in the Hostel Indepencia which is bang smack in the middle of town in Mendoza. The journey here was quite crazy. I had to board a bus from Buenos Aires' infamous bus terminal where I missed my bus last time. This time I was determined it would not happen again and relished at the challenge to make it to my bus. The ticket I was holding said the bus would depart between platforms 4 and 14 and with 10 minutes to go and no sign of my bus ...

Wine tasting!

So after a very short stay in Chile we were already in country number 5, Argentina. We arrived at Hostel Independencia at 6 in the morning to find there were no beds ready until check out at 10.00am. I decided the best thing to do was sleep on the couch in the TV area as I was exhausted and felt like a bear with a sore head! We met some of the other guests as the hostel from Chile and some others who live there long term. One guy has been there over a year. They invited us to join them and so...

Mendoza!

Only spent one day here this time as I had to get to Santiago for Friday evening, but will return to Mendoza on my way back to Buenos Aires. I had a really good day here though, the hostel was really nice and there were lots of great people there. In the morning I walked to the Parque General San Martin and up the big hill to Cerro de la Gloria, a big monument on top of the hill giving a great view. The view would´ve been better if there wasn´t a row of conifers around the top of the hill hid...

Mendoza otravez!

Back in Mendoza! I arrived here at about 8pm and being the great hostel that it is, I managed to get included in a group cook! We had teryaki steak, salad and a great soup with chorizo sausage in it! Perfecto! Was great! Then someone got the guitar out and we did a bit of a singalong, it was a really nice evening. Monday - Bikes and wines! This was great, with a couple of guys from the hostel we all caught the bus out to Maipu where we rented bikes. We then cycled to several factories; olive ...

The Wine Region!

And they thought they'd got rid of us... James and Jonny tried to adopt another couple Mike from Devon and Victoria from Glasgow but it turned out we all got along great. The lads bonded quickly by becoming addicted to ping pong and played on a regular basis into the wee hours of the morning. We changed from the Damajuana Hostel to Hostel Independencia, the guys tried to claim that although our first hostel was nearer the nightlife and had a swimming pool, the new hostel was in a better area,...

Mendoza & Los Penitentes

Mendoza & Los Penitentes - Argentina's wine capital meets the segregated village in the outskirt of Aconcagua - the contrast could not be very different. Mendoza, including its wine resort of Maipu, offers a relaxed atmosphere embedded in enjoyful wine tasting where as Los Penitentes has probably a dozen inhabitants but hundreds of daily heavy trucks that drive through to foster the economic relationship between Argentina and Chile.

Crushed.. like a grape.

... were at the restaurant for 3.5 hours! We obviously needed to get some exercise so we went to the Pircas vineyard in Vista Flores to check out the 100 year old Malbec vines we use for a blend for a Californian winemaker. Pretty delicous ****! Anyway, We have to go back to work. Hopefully there will be pictures soon and an entry that talks about things other than work and food! Hope it´s not too cold! -D

Mendoza - Day 22-23

... British passport. Eventually after many minutes, he allowed us to continue on our way. Maybe he didn't like the British for obvious reasons. After arriving back in Mendoza, it was actually quite nice to catch-up with world events after over 2 weeks without communicating with the outside world. A lot has happened since I've been away. The US has a new president for starters. Obama took office when we we're on the mountain, hopefully we're coming back to world ...
